The bowls could still be used for playoff games...well, some of them anyways...

In the 60's and early 70's only the Rose Bowl and Cotton had tie-ins. The Cotton still had one open slot. Once the Sugar took the SEC champ and the Orange hooked up with the old Big 8 champ there were too many tie ins and not enough good games. It is worse today. Other than the championship game they do not even try to get the best teams to play each other.
If the bowl system is so great why is Div 1A football the only game on earth to use it? Every other sport has a playoff.
