Title: Jimbo Fisher on playoffs

Quote
"When I was a child, I remember who won the Sugar Bowl, who won the Orange Bowl, who won the Cotton Bowl, who won the Rose Bowl," Fisher said Tuesday. "It was a big deal to go. We act like that's not a big deal now. That's one of the great things you have in college football. We're so involved in winning a championship that we're forgetting the tradition and history of doing things."

Quote
"And how many times was the BCS ever wrong?" Fisher said. "How many times did they ever get it wrong at the end? We've still got the same problem. You're going to argue over who's four and five or who's two and three. What's the difference?"

What he says has a lot of merit.

Merit or not, the chance of "getting it right" is much greater with a 4 or 8 team playoff.  The bowls could still be used for playoff games...well, some of them anyways...

I agree with Jimbo....never have been on the playoff bandwagon.

It's funny that the whole purpose behind the BCS was money determining a true champion.  Yet with few exceptions there's been controversy every year concerning which team or teams deserve to get in.

The playoff is only going to change the debate from who is number 2 to who is three or four.

That may be true, but there will be less debate as to who is Number 1 after the games are played.

The bowls ruined themselves with too many tie ins. In the 60's and early 70's only the Rose Bowl and Cotton had tie-ins. The Cotton still had one open slot. Once the Sugar took the SEC champ and the Orange hooked up with the old Big 8 champ there were too many tie ins and not enough good games. It is worse today. Other than the championship game they do not even try to get the best teams to play each other.

If the bowl system is so great why is Div 1A football the only game on earth to use it? Every other sport has a playoff.

I thought the bowl games were great this year compared to the past few years.  No mid-major in the BCS.  And UCF proved they were real.

Playoffs would be great, and I'm in favor of the 4-team format.  I think there are so many teams, and these kids are college students not paid athletes, that you can only expect them to play so many games in a season.  They're already playing more games than ever.

The bowls like tie-ins because it gives them an idea of where they are on the pecking order, which teams they're likely to get for their investment.  Bigger bowls pay bigger bucks to get better teams.  Maybe the Orange Bowl got left out of the best teams, but that was their choice.  The Sugar, Rose and Cotton Bowls have to be happy with their tie-ins.

Bowls don't give a crap about a getting the two best available teams. They want teams that have fan bases that travel well and spend money once they get there. If they get a good game that is just a bonus.
