Longtime booster Red McCombs is not a fan of Texas' decision to hire coach Charlie Strong away from Louisville, calling it a "kick in the face" during a radio interview Monday.

"I think the whole thing is a bit sideways," McCombs said of the selection process during an interview with ESPN 1250 San Antonio. "I don't have any doubt that Charlie is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator.

"But I don't believe [he belongs at] what should be one of the three most powerful university programs in the world right now at UT-Austin. I don't think it adds up."

This is the arrogance of the Texas boosters and why Strong will have problems.

Quote
"I don't see how they can miss," McCombs told the paper. "They can get anyone they want. They can close their eyes and go 'Eeny-meeny-miny-moe' and end up with someone good."

They really believe this crap.

So, how'd that work out between them and Saban, them and Harbaugh, them and (pick a name)?

Eeny-meeny-miney-moe? Really?  :eyeroll:

While Red is at it, maybe he should hose Strong down with a water hose, sic dogs on him, and make him sit on the back on bus.  :eyeroll:  Moron.

Wow.  A position coach or a coordinator?!?  That's harsh after the job he's done at Louisville and considering that he was already a coordinator at Florida before that.  I hope Charlie doesn't already have 2 strikes against him because of other attitudes like that in Austin.

Maybe the color of his skin isn't the problem that he has with Strong being the coach. :dunno:

Sorry. I have a personal issue with items like this, so any time I perceive something could be meant in that matter, I can take offense sometimes a little too quickly. You're right, J. My apologies for jumping the gun.

You were partially right, the guy is a moron. His problem is he is a super-rich jerk and thinks he can buy ANYBODY and he has always had his way because of his money. Now remember, there are probably at least 100-200 guys like him who is associated with Texas which means they will drive Charlie Strong crazy. I feel for Strong. Harbaugh & Saban could never work in circumstances like that or most any other quality coach.

I guess humor is in the eye of the beholder, or lack thereof, if no sense of humor.

His wife his white, somewhere in the bible it says you can't have a white wife, or something like that...
For the record, Moses (Israelite so that makes him kinda white, kinda brown) was married to an Ethiopian (black) woman... Does that help?  :dunno:

There is a long line of attitude that blacks aren't as smart as whites, hence they can't play QB, can't coach, etc.  This comment, that Strong maybe can be an underling but not the head guy, is exactly the same attitude, and will be perceived as such.  Sometimes intention isn't the issue.

I really don't see that. The rich guy thinks Texas can do MUCH better than get a coach at a 2nd tier program, instead of an NFL, SEC, or other big name coach. It's that Texas arrogance, period. Our nation is getting way too thin-skinned about everything.

Hale hits a 3. Tide 63-58. Tide looking a little loosey-goosey here near the end.

Whether there was any racism behind the comment or not, in the current cultural climate it will be taken as such.  He should know better.

That's in addition to the stupidity of announcing to potential recruits that the school is not unified behind the new coach.

Strong appears to be a good coach and will probably do better than Brown post 2009.  There are only a handful of elite coaches in the country, and most of them are already established in good jobs.  Alabama got lucky that Saban was available the year Shula proved he was not going to get it done at Bama.

I don't know if this "mega booster" is actually unhappy with the coaching hire or unhappy the new AD did not consult him and other prominent boosters to get their approval prior to hiring a new coach.

Everything is bigger in Texas including booster's egos.

McCombs apologized for those comments Thursday, telling the San Antonio Express-News he had spoken to Strong over the phone and cleared the air, telling Strong the new Longhorns head man had his "total support.
