Title: DJ Pettway Returns to Team - updated
Post by: ALTideUp on December 18, 2013, 08:09:37 PM
ESPN is reporting that DJ Pettway has signed a letter of intent to return to the team after spending a year at a MS Juco. Pettway was one of 4 team members involved in the robbery and physical assault of a fellow student last Feb

It's true. I was so disappointed to hear that he was one of the guys caught up in the mess that got the 4 kicked off the team. He is from here in P'cola and was always thought of as a good kid before then. A good friend of mine plays poker with his dad from time to time and was telling me how devastated his dad was at what happened, because he had never been in trouble before. The consensus was that he was in the car when everything went down and was literally in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I am of the opinion, from what I've been told about DJ, is that if anyone deserves a 2nd chance it is him. I think this is what CNS feels, as well.

Well, this just makes us like the rest of the unwashed in College football, aka the NFL farm league.

What the h*** makes this guy so great that we got overlook his thugness?

I don't think CNS would allow him back on the team if he was a thug.

What?  You mean he didn't put the re-instatement up for a team vote?  :dunno:

I agree with you on this SC. I can promise you that this young man was given a list of thiings that he would have to accomplish before he could ever be a part of the team again and those things would be a very big challenge to him. Does anyone know what he actually did in the crime, I know there was something about the players using a stolen credit card to buy snacks and I do know that Calloway was a part of this. Maybe this is what Pettway was accused of. I think Pettway might have been treated as a youthful offender but Calloway was too old.

I have heard from a couple of sources that he was in the car when everything went down and was not involved in the assault or the use of the card. His crime was apparently being in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people.

That would make more sense as to why he was given a chance to come back. I'm betting that he's a lot more particular as to who he chooses to be his friend anymore.

I can't imagine that if there were any doubts about the kid's character that Saban would allow him back on the team.  We're not exactly hurting for star players right now.  Of all the great recruiting classes Saban has had this year's class may be the best yet.

This appears to be a case of a guy learning a very difficult life lesson, but rather than giving up he's done everything necessary to get back to where he wants to be.  That's the kind of player I want on the team.

I agree.

"You could tell [Bama] was always a place he was in love with," Lesley said. "That was always the goal and the hope – that he could get back there. I think that was always where his heart was, and a lot of times I think that's where his mind was – he'd watch them on TV a lot. I think the Iron Bowl probably upset him as much as it did anybody."

The first time I talked to him, he said, 'Coach, I made a mistake. That's really not me. I made a mistake. I'm going to learn from it. I've hurt a lot of people in my life and I've hurt the University of Alabama. I've hurt myself. What do I need to do?'

Only time will tell if this was a good decision by the U fo A. From what I have read about Pettway since all of this happened, I think there is a lot of sincerity from him in trying to show everyone that it was a stupid mistake on his behalf and he has been more than willing to do the right things and make the right decisions since, something that CNS preaches.

I wish him the best with his second chance. ;)

I'm missing something.... All this talk about CNS giving Pettway a second chance, but what about the University itself?  Why did the Univ decide to readmit him?  What prompted that?

I'm going to go ahead and say it now...regardless of the reasons why Coach Saban and the University decided to give him a second chance...if all accounts are true about his attitude and demeanor in trying to get back to Alabama, he will be so grateful for the second chance that he will be one of the hardest workers and likely producers on this team next year.  I also predict that he will be one of the first to "crack heads" if players start acting stupid.  With all the 4 and 5 star pre-Madonna's out there...this may be exactly what we need next year...some players with gratitude that they GET to play for the University of Alabama.
