Title: Why Texas Football Recruiting & Playing Has Failed - Incredible Article Post by: Marshal Dillon on December 14, 2013, 11:40:25 AM This is an incredible example of the incompetence & ineptness of the Texas football coaches & Mack Brown. Read the the entire link. This is not a recent article, but it sure makes the point after the season is over and Mack was trying to keep his job.
Quote Texas’ misses from the class of 2006 include Matthew Stafford (a 5-star prospect from Dallas), Greg McElroy (a 3-star from Southlake, Texas), Christian Ponder (a 3-star from Colleyville, Texas) and Andy Dalton (a 3-star from Katy, Texas). According to Rivals, the Longhorns did tender an offer to Stafford (who went to Georgia), but didn’t extend deals to McElroy (Alabama), Ponder (Florida State) or Dalton (TCU). In what turned out to be a big year for quarterback recruiting in the state of Texas, the Longhorns didn’t sign a signal-caller in 2008. Prospects that Texas missed out on included Andrew Luck (a 4-star from Houston), Robert Griffin III (a 4-star from Copperas Cove, Texas), Darron Thomas (a 4-star from Aldine, Texas) and Nick Florence (a 3-star from Garland, Texas.). I think I counted 7 players who are now NFL QB's. Amazing. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1769270-history-of-texas-longhorns-quarterbacks-post-colt-mccoy :o Title: Re: Why Texas Football Recruiting & Playing Has Failed - Incredible Article Post by: cbbama99 on December 14, 2013, 01:10:15 PM Wow. These are the guys that Texas should be getting easily. That is inexcusable for a program like UT to whiff on this many players. I really don't see how Mack survives this, but it seems that the UT admins are sticking with him .... so far.

I think Mack Brown is a very fine, decent man who has made MANY high-level friends while at Texas. He probably called them all up and cashed in some favors to keep his job……for now. Unfortunately, I just don't see him taking the program bad to the top. Of course, it's not like they have been soaring like eagles since he has been there. They have won 2 conference titles and 1 NC in 16 years. This is why I don't understand their fan base being unhappy. There are many teams out there that don't do that well yet they keep their coaches for years. Take Kansas State for example. They have had the same coach for about 22 years and have only won their conference championship twice I think and never a national championship yet their fans are happy...Pretty sure there are other schools that are similar too... I know that "It's Texas" and all that. Still, He has done well at UT...Title: Re: Why Texas Football Recruiting & Playing Has Failed - Incredible Article Post by: Marshal Dillon on December 14, 2013, 02:20:03 PM I think Mack Brown is a very fine, decent man who has made MANY high-level friends while at Texas. Texas is the wealthiest program in college football, the state is loaded with maybe 150 big time prospects each year, and Texas has a record of winning big going back many years. That's the difference. Title: Re: Why Texas Football Recruiting & Playing Has Failed - Incredible Article Post by: hscoach on December 14, 2013, 02:53:12 PM Some of the talk over the years has been that when they do get the top athletes, they don't develop them. They try to get by on their athletic ability. Also, there has been a question of discipline in the program.

They try to get by on their athletic ability. Also, there has been a question of discipline in the program. I read somewhere that Mack & his coaches are mailing it in on recruiting. They go by what the recruiting services say and recruit from that. They don't do their own analysis and check out more players. That's why they ignored Manziel, McElroy, Ponder, RGIII, Luck, Winston, & several more. They aren't paying attention. :problem: Title: Re: Why Texas Football Recruiting & Playing Has Failed - Incredible Article Post by: Catch Prothro on December 15, 2013, 09:08:20 AM This is an incredible example of the incompetence & ineptness of the Texas football coaches & Mack Brown. Plus Jameis Winston really wanted to go to Texas, and they didn't give him a look.Quote Texas’ misses from the class of 2006 include Matthew Stafford (a 5-star prospect from Dallas), Greg McElroy (a 3-star from Southlake, Texas), Christian Ponder (a 3-star from Colleyville, Texas) and Andy Dalton (a 3-star from Katy, Texas).
