witnesses said Mills began smoking a cigarette in a non-smoking area of the bar, which prompted an argument with the bar's owner, Chris Ferrell.

Those witnesses said Mills and Ferrell were friends.

Ferrell told police he shot Mills in self-defense. Authorities are investigating those claims. Ferrell has a valid handgun carry permit. The Tennessean reported that Ferrell was back at the bar Saturday afternoon but declined to speak with reporters.

There was probably some "liquid courage" involved as well. :(

I am always fascinated when I read something like this. I've never had "friends"  like that.

I found a Wayne Mills on the 1991 football roster. He was a senior, #86 a tight end, 6'3" 210#. Strangely, he was not listed on the 1990 or 1989 roster.

When the sun sets, these two guys are friends. When it comes up again, one is dead and the other will at least face a life of regret for having shot his friend, and at worst may be thrown in prison for manslaughter. All this because of a gun the bar owner bought for protection. How ironic and how sad.

Well I sure hate to see anybody leave this walk of life like this. What is left now, is to pray for the family and hope they can come to an understanding of what happened. RTR!

I googled him earlier today. I had never heard of him. He played two years of JUCO baseball at Wallace State in Hanceville. After that he walked on at Alabama.

Years ago he had some guys named Blake Shelton, Jamey Johnson, & Taylor Hicks be his opening act for his gigs.

I've seen Wayne perform a time or three.  You rarely sat through a show without learning that he was an Alabama man.  He had a lot of Bama in him.

He was a real live wire.

I always enjoyed his version of "Rocky Top".

There is a benefit Dec. 3 at Harry's.
