Title: Hurt: Namath returns
Post by: pmull on May 24, 2011, 07:47:02 AM
Quote
Namath has never cut ties to the town where he attended college. Even after the death of his college coach and mentor, Paul "Bear" Bryant, he's maintained connections in this community, to former coaches and teammates and to other friends who were here during his formative years. He even came back to finish his degree at the University of Alabama a few years ago.

And now, when Tuscaloosa needs him, he is back again. Like so many former UA coaches and players, Namath has come to town to take part not just in Mal Moore's annual charity golf tournament - although that event does annually bring many celebrities back to town - but to help.

Shaun Alexander is here, and will be for the next couple of days. DeMeco Ryans, who has brought truckloads of relief supplies to tornado victims both in Jefferson County and Tuscaloosa, is back as well. Marty Lyons, Ray Perkins, Gene Stallings, John Stallworth, Mo Williams and more have come back. They shared Namath's concerns - and a sense of connection to the community where they grew up, or played or coached collegiate sports. The neighborhoods they tour, the damage they witness - they carry the special resonance of home.

"It knocks the wind out of you," Namath said at NorthRiver Yacht Club on Monday. "I knew people who used to live in those neighborhoods. I know people today who were affected. My closest friends escaped, thank God. But one of the ladies who helped me when I came back to finish my degree lost her home.

It does a heart good to see so many former players willing to come to help. Kudos to Joe Willie and the rest.

I saw a short video this morning, where folks in Tuscaloosa were sending relief items (rec'd in abundance or over abundance) to Joplin. MO., yesterday. Wow on a couple of levels. RTR

This is just pure love pouring out of human hearts. It is a Blessing to see this no matter  where it is. Remember today to pray for Missouri because they have tornados coming again today. RTR!

You're right preacher. The WC said that mid to late afternoon the Joplin area will be in a Tor-Con 9 area, which means there is a 90% probability that a tornado will be within 50 miles of them. They are expecting a very large area to have tornado outbreaks today in the Mid-West.
