Title: Slive Willing to Discuss Paying Athletes More on Scholarship
Post by: Marshal Dillon on May 20, 2011, 07:03:00 PM
I think this is a result of the O'Banion lawsuit.

Do they think this will deter the chances of players stepping out of line and taking money from boosters/agents?  ???

It won't stop players from taking cars or money or parties! It should only be done if all schools are able to do it even down through the little schools. JMHO! RTR!

This is not something that the conference or the NCAA as a whole wants to step into. Once you start paying players, then you have problems of how much, do you pay all student athletes or just some, will other athletic programs at schools suffer, and what happens to the small schools who can't afford to keep up with the big boys in paying their athletes. You basically turn major college sports (particularly football and basketball) into minor leagues for the pro sports (although this truth is not far off now as it is).

I agree with you, they better be very careful with this issue.

They get 10 bucks a month now (or some nominal amount like that), so why not something a litte more they actually use?  Even graduate students get stipends.

Probably nothing, but I still think you need to tread carefully. Although I have never been a big believer in making sure everyone everywhere were equal in every way (as do certain politicians that I won't name here), the NCAA and bigger schools could open themselves up to litigation on this from other smaller programs and conferences.

If this goes forward, does Cam Newton get Grandfathered in?

When they talk about paying players more, does this have some approach like the AAU? When will the first lockout occur? RTR!
