Title: The 3peat chase is on
Post by: Jamos on August 17, 2013, 09:18:06 PM
Bama finished their 2nd scrimmage today and now it's time for the chase of the 3peat. The weather was great but there seemed to be a lot of jet lag on the field today. Mental mistakes was the rule of the day on both sides of the ball, penalties, dropped passes, blown coverages, fumbles, sacks, missed tackles. etc.. There were some bright spots though, some good runs, a couple of long pass completions for touchdowns, and a jarring tackle by Rueben Foster.

There are so many outstanding athletes on this team but if you don't play well as a unit, being outstanding doesn't matter much. If any of you have any doubts about running backs, you can rest easy. As far as just running the ball I think they could play spin the bottle to select who would be in the game. There were some beautiful runs today but as CNS says, you have to learn to block as well and that is what separates the pack. I was very impressed with Freshmen Tenpenny and Tyren Jones, they do have some running skills. Yeldon and Henry looked to be the 2 starters. Drake struggled a little though.

The receivers are like the running backs, lots of good talent there as well. There were a lot of dropped passes though, way too many. There were some good catches but had this been a real game, Bama would have done a lot of punting today.

AJ wasn't as sharp as he usually is either, I know there were  some dropped passes but there were some poorly thrown passes also. Sims seems to be the #2 QB and had some good moments early in the scrimmage.

It was very hard to get a feel for who was playing well because of the way the players were being rotated.

CNS is still concerned with having enough good leaders. He used the word selfishness as being a problem with some, they are too concerned about how well they are doing and not willing to sacrifice some time to help the other players become better players on and off the field.

This team is loaded with player potential and us fans will need to be a little patient while this team establishes themselves. This team has no identification just yet but in the next two weeks I think there will be a big improvement in them. Roll Tide!!

Thanks for the report, J.  #+ Great job!

I just hope they get it together in 2 weeks. It seems that during the scrimmages with all the excessive substitutions that everything is a little loosey goosey every year at this time. I have faith that they will be ready for VT.

Thanks for the info!  #+

I hope that once he gets his ones and twos squared away they will settle in.

It always makes me a little nervous when CNS is downbeat.  :popcorn2:

CNS was not pleased in his press conference. He said several times the team lacked focus. They have practiced 19 times in two weeks. They will get Sunday and Monday off. CNS stressed two days rest is 10 times better than one day. They will watch film and lift weights on Monday. Practice will resume on Tuesday. The staff will start putting the VT game plan in Thursday or Friday.

The first game is less than two weeks away.

The first indication of what the day would be like was when some of the players were coming out of the tunnel onto the field walking. Coach Rumph started yelling at them to pick up their pace but their reaction wasn't much.

There were some players that practiced well. Dalvin Tomlinson caught my eye, I think that he brings a lot to the table on every snap. Bradley Sylve made a couple of very nice plays on long passes, much better than last year but he is still learning that position. Ivory and Lake bring nothing on a pass rush, but their size helps plug the middle on rushing plays. The secondary had some good series though, there were times when AJ was flushed from the pocket and ran the ball and yes, everybody was holding their breath. Alex Morris was the first QB to lead his team to a TD. AJ and Sims had managed only a field goal. Morris showed a good knack of moving out of the pocket for some positive yards when the pass coverage was there, his footspeed surprised me a little.

Mandell is still kicking well, but the placekicking struggled some yesterday, some of that though was due to the snapper and holder.

For all of you Dee Hart fans, he had a very good day yesterday. It was good to see him playing as he did before his injuries. CNS just loves this guy and for two reasons. First, he said that if all of the players played with the desire and effort of Hart, he would garauntee that they would win all of their games but he followed with, that isn't the case though. Second, he likes Hart because Hart is the only player on the team that is shorter than him and that brought some head nods and that smirk from him.

Jamos, what did the back up QB's look like? CNS said in his press conference that Blake Sims was doing well and they are looking for someone to take the #3 spot. He said they looked at Del Rio and Bateman yesterday. He seemed to indicate that Del Rio was leading. He said they worked Morris last scrimmage but they have to get down to 3 because they are not enough reps for everyone.

Also, how bad is Brandon Ivory's injury?

To me, just from yesterday, it would be a toss of a coin as to who is leading. I did think that Morris really took charge when he came in, he was the last of the three to play. When the receivers were covered, he did not take a sack. His foot speed coming out of the pocket surprised me a little. To me, Bateman and Morris seemed to have the stronger arms. CNS doesn't rate QBs by arm strength though, it's who makes the fewest mistakes and shows leadership capabilities.

Ivory limped off the field and it seemed to maybe be a strain of some sort. They have two days off and this should help him.
