Title: Basketball: Things are not going well at Auburn
Post by: pmull on July 21, 2013, 04:13:17 PM
The barn basketball program is a train wreck. This ESPN article does not make it look like they will get it turned around anytime soon.

Quote
When it comes to Auburn basketball, that (above) is usually the case. The Tigers have been to the NCAA tournament just eight times in school history, the most recent of which came in 2003. Not that most Auburn fans have noticed.

Point is, the history of Auburn basketball is not exactly glittering. And even so, things have rarely looked quite so bad.

Early Thursday morning, Lee County, Ala., sheriff's officers arrested Auburn guard Shaquille Johnson and charged him with second degree marijuana possession, a Lee County Sheriff's Office spokesman confirmed to ESPN.com Thursday afternoon.

This news -- that a mostly unknown Auburn player was dismissed following a misdemeanor drug arrest -- would be relatively minor if not for a couple of extenuating circumstances.

The first is that Johnson was, at least by Auburn's standards, a massively important player. He entered college ranked 99th in the 2012 ESPN 100, the second-best asset alongside No. 61-ranked guard Jordan Price and IMG College postgraduate Brian Greene. Over the next few years, that class was supposed to make Barbee's team competitive again, if not immediately, then at the very least gradually. The former didn't come to pass -- Auburn went 9-23 in 2012-13 and finished No. 194 in Ken Pomeroy's efficiency rankings -- and the latter is no longer an option. Both Price and Greene left Auburn in April and May, respectively. Now, after just one (abysmal) season, all three are gone, and the large class slated to replace them doesn't comprise anything remotely resembling the 2012 group's talent or pedigree.

Quote
No one ever said Barbee's rebuilding project would be easy. Auburn is Auburn, after all. But even if you grade Barbee on the most generous possible curve, the Tigers still aren't passing.

I saw a story on Johnson being arrested and dismissed from the team earlier & I thought what a disaster for a lousy Auburn team. I don't know how much longer Barbee wants to put up with this circus, he may fire Auburn and walk away if something else comes along. It's amazing how much chaos the BB program seems to stay in. Jay Jacobs can sure pick 'em.

The Barn fans are handling this with some humor & reality.

RE: Shoot this dog and put it out of its misery.

Well I wish the kid well but the fact remains that when you look at our record and our overall program - it stinks.

I have never seen anything like this regarding a sports program. Year after year we are losing our best talent because a rules violations, CHEATING, transferring, not making grades, etc...

We are a joke. And we just spent a fortune on a new arena. It makes me want to vomit.][/quote]

I heard on the radio today that former Auburn basketball player, Korvotney Barber, was found dead near "Pineapple Willies" in Panama City this morning.

Yeah but the autopsy hasn't been done yet.

They said that the red flags were out on the beach. A rip current may have gotten him.
