Title: Volunteer Info About Hackleburg or Phil Campbell
Post by: Marshal Dillon on April 29, 2011, 11:12:54 PM
Does anyone have any info on volunteer oppurtunities for Phil Campbell or Hackleburg? I live in Northeast Jefferson county, but I feel these very small towns need some major help. Hackleburg, population around 1600 has 27 dead. Phil Campbell, pop. 1100 has 12 dead. Both towns have been flattened. It seems Tuscaloosa & Bham area have a ton of help, so I am considering volunteering to help, like cutting up trees, picking up debris, clean-up stuff. If someone can provide me a phone number and or location for these areas I would appreciate it.

I dont know about Phil Cambell, but I have heard and read from multiple sources that hackleburg is gone.  There was a lady on the radio from Hamilton that said they arent letting anyone get over there.

Here is an article about the small towns that got hammered.

Quote

Tornadoes suddenly stop life in small town South

RAINSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Lisa Chandler and her husband have been working nonstop since the deadly tornado outbreak, moving around the one generator powering their funeral home so they can get ready for services for six of the dead. Some are people they knew.

"How am I handling it? I cry a little and I pray a lot," she said.

Small towns like Rainsville, in the northeast corner of the state, were once just dots on the map, rural places few outsiders had ever heard of. Now they're wrenching scenes of destruction from storms that killed hundreds in seven states.

Yeah, Rainsville is in DeKalb county. The deah toll for the county is 35. I probably won't try to do anything until Tuesday, at the earliest. I am leaning more towards Hackleburg and/or Phil Campbel. Also, areas of Calhoun county got hit hard with 9 deaths, so I am looking at that area, too. I lived in Oxford for 13 years, great area.

Yeah, they had looters at the plant after the tornado. Incredible dirtbags. Thanks for the photos, they just reenforce the level of destruction and death at the location.

Well, I'm going to head towards Hackleburg Thursday. I have a couple of numbers I'm going to call and see who needs what, where. I have my pickup truck, ATV 4WD, trailer, several tools, heavy duty wheelbarrow, chains, buckets, etc. I have a little bit of everything, but I'll probably do clean up work.

I forgot to mention my trip to the Hackleburg area on Thursday (May 5). Hackleburg is in Marion county and had at least 15 people killed during the tornadoes. The populaiton was around 1700. Once I got to Hamilton, I contacted a volunteer fireman for the Shiloh Volunteer Fire Dept. Shiloh is a rural community in Marion couty and they lost 4 people in the storm. I drove to their station with a load of clothes from my wife, batteries, manual can opener, and I made a donation to the fire station. Three women were at the station collecting and/or handing out canned foods, clothing, dishes, plates, etc. They were expecting a semi-truck of supplies later in the afternoon. I then left and went to Hackleburg and was pleasantly surprised to see a large contingen of people and groups there. This included the National Guard, State Troopers, Alabama Dept of Transportation, Alabama Power, and volunteers, including a church group from one of my niece's church in Falkville. I had my 4WD ATV on a trailer I was pulling and I used it driving over the site delivering supplies, dragging stuff, helping anyway I could. Basically, the town is wiped out. I think ony 3 businesses were left somewhat intact, a BBQ place, auto parts store and one other. I drove out of town and for about 3 miles all you saw was forests which had been destroyed. The area is just one huge disaster site. Very sad.

Thanks for your efforts, MD. I know that these small towns are in desperate need of help, and I am glad to hear that Hackleberg is getting its share.

Yeah, channel 33/40 here in the Ham organized a huge volunteer effort for today in Hackleburg, so I expect a giant turnout was in Hackleburg/Marion County today.
