Title: Trussville High School Baseball Heading to State Championship Game
Post by: Marshal Dillon on May 11, 2013, 03:27:25 PM
Trussville baseball just beat the Hoover Bucs 3-1 in their final best of three series. Trussville & Hoover split yesterday the first two, 4-0 Bucs then 5-3 Huskies. Trussville has a side arm, submarine pitching relief ace who is absolutely incredible. He got out of a bases loaded, no outs jam in the 5th inning today with no damage and that won the game. The state finals will start Friday with a best of 3 series. Huskies will play either Auburn or Pelham high schools.

Trussville will play Pelham for the State baseball championship starting Friday in a best-of-3 series. An ironic twist in the game, the Trussville baseball coach was head coach of Pelham until last year when Trussville hired him away from there.

Trussville's field is named after my high school coach Phil English.

Coach English was at Huffman for many years and moved to Trussville after Huffman went from a nice school to a rough inner city school. He was a good coach. We won the state and was a contenter every year I played. I think he won a championship at Hewitt-Trussville too.

Good luck to the Huskies.

Thanks for the info.  I wondered who Phil English was when I saw the name of the field.

Coach English was elected into the AHSAA Hall of Fame in 1994. I played for him in the mid 70's when he was at Huffman. We were one of the top programs in the state at that time.

Quote
PHIL ENGLISH – Coached baseball for 28 years at Ensley, Banks, Huffman and Hewitt-Trussville and compiled a career record of 566-217, with two state championships. Only three of his teams since 1971 have failed to reach the state playoffs and 12 of his players signed professional contracts. He was active on the AHSAA Baseball Committee. A graduate of Ensley High and Birmingham-Southern College.

There are 3 teams from Lauderdale County in the state finals - Shoals Christian (1A), Mars Hill Bible School (3A), and Brooks (4A).  Mars Hill won the 2A championship last year.  Shoals Christian has won several in the last few years.  If Brooks sounds familiar, that's where Freddie Roach and Tim Bowens played football.

Lotta good baseball in NW Alabama.

Hartselle is in the (5A) finals. They could be considered NW Alabama as well.

Former Mars Hill Bible/UNA grad Josh Willingham has been in the pros for 6 or 7 years now.  He still lives in Florence during the offseason, and his family is there almost year round.

Huntsville isn't really part of the western side, but the Braves closer Kimbrel is from Huntsville.

Hartselle has had a solid baseball program for several years now. Hartselle is in North Central Alabama along with Decatur. pmull is being generous in crediting them being in the NW part of the state. I was surprised to see so many good BB teams in that part of the state.

Trussville lost to Pelham 3-2 on Friday in the first game of the State Championship. They play again at 4 pm today (Saturday), then again at 7 pm, if Trussville wins the 4 pm game.

Hartselle won the 5A championship. They have a very good program. Since 1990 they have made it to the finals 11 times winning 8 championships.
