Bill Battle is 72 years old (born 1941).  ???

He's 71 years old. Am I missing something? Is this how we look to the "future" with a guy of that age. I don't get it? pmull had a good idea for AD in another thread, Shane Lyons, but he's under 60 so I guess he was eliminated as a candidate.

Maybe we should look to Bobby Bowden as AD, he's 83. I'm sure the BOT would love that.

More than anything, I see this as a transitional pick, i.e. bridging the gap between Mal and the next long term AD.  Mal is going to be hanging around so they needed someone who would be OK with Mal looking over their shoulder.  Mal & Battle have a long relationship, so they should be comfortable together.  Also BB is someone that the alumni will accept.

Gotta believe feelers were made with Ozzie and he said not now.  This is Mal's recommendation and nobody wanted to challenge that.

So, say BB stays 5 - 7 years.  Still time for the return of Ozzie.

I remember BB as a player.  He was tough.  I mean... really, to survive those early '60's teams you HAD to be tough!

CMM is an emotional issue with me-- I like him very much and feel a personal attachment to the program as long as he is there.  So when Ivan Maisel and quite a few others refer to him (past tense) as if he is dead, I get  >:(.

I think you could be right about it being a transitional pick, even though I think we have to move on, since we don't even know how serious the medical condition is for Mal Moore. Ozzie Newsome makes at least $3 mil a year at the Super Bowl winning Ravens. Why would he leave? Maybe when he hits 70 we can get him.

Well when it was spoke of the toughness of the 1960 teams, it was really mean. Bill was not the biggest man on the team although he did have some of our linemen beat. RTR!

I think this hire may show that someone from the BOT (or other administration position) may be running things with the help of the AD staff. In Battle we are getting another former player who is politically correct and a southern gentlemen to be the face of the program while the real work is being done out of sight. I have have nothing to base this on, just a hunch.

Shane Lyons, Deputy Director of Athletics, who replaced Dave Hart has an excellant resume. He is responsible for the daily operations of the athlectic dept. It looks to me like he will run things while Battle meets, greets and shakes hands with the big money donors.

I agree.  Someone who can get along with the donors.  Ozzie said someting about wanting to win another Super Bowl at the Ravens, plus he makes better money there, so AD at Bama is in the way back burner for him, maybe when he is closer to retirement.

I have compiled a list of possible AD's for the near future after Battle resigns.

Joe Namath- 69 (current age)
John Hannah-62
Woodrow Lowe-58 (may have to wait another 10 years)
Gene Stallings-78
Jay Barker-40 (he will be a prime candidate in 2040)

I appreciate any input you guys might have.

What do you whippersnappers have against BB?  Just because he's 71?  Seems to me age and experience are a good match for such a job...Mal had age and experience..did you "dis" him for it?  BB has business acumen also..seems like a good guy for the job..and remember..since most of you put MM on a pedestal..he hand picked BB for his successor.. So?

While we are on the subject..I could never see why CPBB picked Ray Perkins to succeed him..He turned out to be a so-so coach, and had zero personality....for years thereafter, if the Bear's dog hadn't pi**ed on your britches leg, you could not be considered as coach at Bama. I loved, still do, Coach Stallings. Fran was a disaster, Dubose was a dumb pick, I sorta liked Shula, and thought MM lost a lugnut when he picked Mike Price.

Am forever glad we hired CNS..even though I was hesitant at first.

I am a BB fan...and I am a young 68.  (C&BA, class of 67)

Roll, Tide!

Brilliant picks! They could be AD starting around 2050-2055 when Jay Barker would be retiring as AD. Great thinking ahead (way ahead!)

Mal had been a part of the program for over 20 years straight with 5 of that as an Asst. AD. Big difference when compared to Bill Battle.

I thought Stallings was CPBB's first pick, but the BOT passed over him because he was an aTm man.  I could be wrong about that.

I have always heard Coach Bryant wanted Stallings. The BOT did not want Stallings because of his poor record and firing at A&M. Most people don't realize Stallings was coaching a military school during the Vietnam War. Hard to recruit and win there at that time.

The Junction was CPBB's version of the 4th Qtr. program-- LOL-- CGS led by example --same as Coach Bryant.
