Title: Alabama hosts South Carolina (3:00 SEC Network)
Post by: pmull on February 16, 2013, 08:13:43 AM
Quote
The Alabama men's basketball team will return home for the second time in the month of February when it begins a two-game homestand against South Carolina on Saturday. The contest, which will be the lone meeting of the regular season between the two teams, will tip off at 3 p.m. CT and will be televised on the SEC Network.

“We’re looking forward to getting a home game,” UA head coach Anthony Grant said. “We’ve had a few road games so it will be good to get home. We’re playing a South Carolina team that I have a lot of respect for. Certainly, their coach (Frank Martin) and I go way back until the time when I was about 14 or 15 years old. We went to high school together, we coached together. He’s a really good guy. I’m aware of the challenge they’ve had of late, but really impressed watching their team play in terms of how hard they play, the way they defend, the intensity they play with. Our guys have to be ready for what’s coming.”

The Crimson Tide (16-8, 8-3 SEC) enter the game in a tie for second overall in the SEC standings, and have won eight of its last 10 games coming into Saturday’s contest. Most recently, the Tide captured a 52-45 victory at Georgia on Tuesday night. Sophomore guard Rodney Cooper was the only UA player to hit double figures, accounting for 14 points to go along with five boards in the win. He has now scored in double digits in four-straight games coming into Saturday’s contest.

I've got my fingers crossed that Bama finally unloads on somebody and beats them handily. I need it mostly for my health, these close games are just too tough on me. ;)

This is a game we should win with ease. USCe is not very good. They are 12-12 overall and 2-9 SEC. A will not help our NCAA resume but a loss will kill us. We have a chance to pick up two home wins this week with the game today and a very bad Miss State team on Wednesday.

I think Bama has a chance to win all their games until they go to Florida, that will be a tough one. It's a bit of a stretch of the imagination but Bama can play much better than they have been playing.

I agree. The road game at LSU will be the most difficult in that stretch.

It has been 24 hrs. since I checked this, so who knows (pmull snope will check me--lol), but I think USCe has only 1 SEC road win and that is at LSU. TIFWIW

9FG is off to a great start with a strong rebound and a slick move under the basket.  He gets the layup and the foul shot for 3 points.  Now he gets a block and causes the guy to travel.

Hmmm... if he finally starts to click we might have something.

Bama by 18. 7:45 minutes left in half. That UK loss brings up the pain I was just starting to get over by the Vols. If we are going to stomp a puddle in someone's arse, these are the guys. UF just ran up 75 versus 36 against USCe.

We got very sloppy late in the half. Can not hit free throws. We still lead by 11.

23 pt. lead now cut to 11 at the half. 35-24

The predictible Bama drought. We have blown 5 or 6 point halftime leads but this would take the cake. Not going to happen. Change of rims will cool what MO USCe took to the lockers. Pollard and Jacob have yet to contribute but Bama scoring is spread around, making it harder to understand why a 1st half ending drought cost us a 20 point lead.

They keep fouling us and we kept missing free throws in the last 4 minutes. They even bank in a three to end the half. CAG should get on them good. Look for us to extend the lead early in the 2nd half.

BAMA back up by 17. Tide has resumed their role as Top 3 team and USCe has once again become USCe. 13 minutes.

It may have been JAMOS wanting to finally run one up on someone. Does that explain the pockets of empty seats at Coleman? Lack of enthusiasm for a poor USCe opponent? Seats not filled by moving the nose bleeds down after the tip?

Under 2:30--- Tide by 13.

68-58 (final)

Sole possession of 2nd place ahead of UK, behind UF. The dark days of December had me, and I'm sure others, rethinking CAG and wondering what can be salvaged of this season in preparing for 2013-14.  I guess the big surprise of today was that there was really no surprises. We shot over our heads some from the floor, and under our average from the line.

The surprise could be Arky beating Mizzou. They are tied 63 all. The game is on ESPN.

On a separate note, I am excited about next year's team.  Releford will be a senior, and we have Lacy, Randolph, and Cooper back as Juniors.  Jacobs should be much improved in his 2nd year, which would make a huge difference in helping out the other 4 to take their game to the next level.

20lbs and a years confidence on Pollard. Perhaps an auto impact surprise or two in the recruiting class. But Jacobs and Pollard with another year of weight training could turn out dynamic.

Bama is down to a 6 game season now with their backs to the wall. They must win at least 4 of the next six regular season games to have a chance at all for the Big Dance, and then win at least 2 games in the SEC Tournament. It won't be easy. With the SEC being hated so much because of football, I don't expect any favors from the selection committee come selection time.

Miss State - Home
LSU - There
Auburn - Home
Florida - There
Ole Miss - There
Georgia - Home

I agree we need to win 4 of the remaining regular season games. As it looks now we will be one of the top 4 teams that will get a bye until Friday. Winning two puts us in the finals. We may only have to win one.

We should be better next year for sure. We only lose Steele. Releford, Randolph, Lacey and Cooper all return. Jacobs will be in his third year. He was injured in the off season and he is just now playing like we expected. Gueye and Engstrom will be back. Pollard will have a year under his belt and time in the weight room. We add two big men as incoming freshmen. One is already 6-10 220. He is trying to put on weight to be ready to bang in the paint. The other is a 6-8 power forward. Obasohan will also be a second year player. He is starting to show signs he can play. We have a lot to look forward to.

Enough about next year. Let go win some games and get in the NCAA Tournament this year.

As far fetched as it may seem, Bama has got to get Gueye and Engstrom ready for next year. I thought Pollard would be a lot of help this year because he was rated so high out of high school, but that hasn't been the case at all. I just don't see any high schooler coming in and making that big of an impact for the team, maybe a juco could. Maybe they should send them up to New York for the summer and let them play in that summer league, they'll get an education of basketball  there. They have this kid coming in from Greensboro High School next year, he's a little taller than Pollard but I think his skills are no better than Pollards.

Yep, good analysis of the state of the team for next year.  Jacobs actually played last year too and looked much better than he has so far this year, so hopefully he will be back at full strength next year, along with Engstrom.  Gueye will only get so far, acceptable for D and under the basket rebounds, but forget about shooting or dribbling.

I think this team will do enough down the stretch to make the NCAA Tournament, as the second or third best SEC team with a half-decent RPI.  This team has a legit shot at the SEC, and that is the post season I am most interested in right now.

It was a good win today against SC, Bama led from start to finish, and the game was never really in double.

I think the talking heads were saying that before Ole Miss and KY's losses.  Bama should be a solid invite team as No. 2 in the SEC and playing a tougher non-conference schedule than most SEC teams.

Jacobs was better last year because Green was getting so much attention. It will help him next year if we get another big guy capable of scoring in the paint.

Florida will get in. Maybe as a No. 1 seed. The rest of the league is fighting for two, maybe three spots. We leveled the playing field today with UK and Mizzou losing. Oe Miss is fading fast. They lost a good big man with a knee injury a few games ago and have not won since. They play UGA tonight.

The committee looks at the entire season but finishing second in the SEC has to account for something.

Well I have only got to watch one game our Cable bunch don't have the SEC Network. I do however read every post on basketball in here.
What I am now seeing is an Alabama team that sounds of getting better at this time of the year than they did last year. If we can keep the inside circle covered, and up our 3 Pt. percentage we could be in it for the March and April madness. I am not going to guess but I can feel maybe a Elite 8? RTR!

Elite 8 - I like your optomism.
