I was crossing the street in the early AM when I recognized Coach Bryant sitting in his unmarked state car. He was parked next to Gorden-Palmer (math), strategically situated so he could watch the entrance to the athletic dorm. I literally froze in my tracks. He kinda chuckled and beckoned me with his Chesterfield hand. RTR

The 1972 season Bama was playing Texas in the (Jan 1, 1973) Cotton Bowl. A friend of mine invited me to go to Dallas with his family to see the game. We stayed at the Marriott Hotel the Alabama team was staying at. The team buses came in from a practice. Coach Bryant was on the first bus. He lead the team throught the crowd into the hotel. I was in shock. That team was loaded. Terry Davis, Wilber Jackson, John Hannah, Jim Krapf, John Croyle, Mike Dubose, Woodrow Lowe, Leroy Cook, Buddy Brown and the whole team. I was 14 at the time and I will never forget that trip. Bama lost the game 17-13 on a bad call. The Texas QB stepped clearly out of bounds to avoid a tackler and scored the winning TD.
