Title: Will Black play?
Post by: bama87 on November 25, 2012, 05:29:49 PM
CNS says he will revisit whether to take red shirt off. Any thoughts. I say if he is as good as advertised play him. We need speed on the outside to go with Cooper.

Unless there are more injuries I would say no. Bama has capable receivers that haven't played as much as some, but they can do the job.

Have him ready and see how it goes.  If we need him, put him in the game.  If he is really good he will leave after 3 years any way, so no need to save a year of eligibility that will never be used.  JMHO.

Absolutely.  Early and often.

I have to agree with SC, because if he is ready and have a NEED then use him, if not then do not take that red shirt off, because we want to keep him as long as we can. RTR!

After listening to Cecil Hurt yesterday, I have to agreee with him. Cecil stated that Bama is in a position to win another NC this year and even though Black is a freshman, there is no garauntee that Bama will be in this position in the upcoming years of this players career at Bama to win a NC.

Also, as was stated above, Black may only be at Bama for three years and if he didn't play this year and was physically able, it would be a total loss of this one year with two left to play. There is the argument also that he might need a redshirt year after what has happened this year. When you look at his highly rated ability as a player you have to pretty much factor in that he has an excellent chance to move on to the next level after his three years.

It's a roll of the dice but right now Bama has the ole"bird in hand" advantage and they are garaunteed a shot at the NC and I'm pretty sure we will see Black play this Saturday. The question there is, how long will CNS wait to put him in?

Article on Chris by Chase Goodbread...

Quote
"It's going to be very difficult, being that he really hasn't played all season, but he's been out there practicing a little bit. It's going to be real tough," Norwood said. "With his mentality, I'm pretty sure he can come away with something."

Chris Black could be back in action for the Crimson Tide soon.
Saban said wide receiver is a position where the UA staff would prefer to rotate players, making depth more important.

"Guys get a little winded at times, especially when they run a lot of deep routes or when you go two-minute or something," Saban added. "We definitely need to get more guys ready to play. It's going to create an opportunity for some other people."

Then there is the advantage associated with a player on whom there isn't an inch of film. They don't know what he's good at, what he's bad at, or his tendencies. Is he fast? Can he come off a chuck? Is there a tell that he's about to make a double move? No idea.

I don't think he will play. Everything I have read CNS is saying we have 5 receivers that are capable of getting the job done. He wants to get Black ready in case of an injury.

Maybe that's what Saban wants everyone to think...

Only he knows for sure.

CNS talked it over with Black's family and they gave the go ahead. Reports are he is working at the Y position behind Norwood. I hope he runs wild on the dawgs. He has fresh legs and speed. He is far from beat up so I believe he makes a difference..

Exactly. I think he is a last resort. If Norwood or Cooper go down, then we see Black.

My guess would be he doesn't start.  The staff will get a feel for how the offense is doing against UGA's D on the first few possessions.  If the offense is able to move the ball and score some points early without him, he won't play.  If it looks like the offense needs another weapon, he'll play.

I think he plays.
If he's as good as advertised, and ready, then I agree 100%.  Burn the redshirt if necessary.

But I haven't been watching him practice -- you know Saban has -- so while we can speculate, we won't really know until he lines up in the Y position and makes a catch.

It looks like he will play.

Quote
“Chris wants to play,” Saban said, adding he made the decision in combination with Black and his family. “He can help the team by playing. It might help his development between this game and one more game, wherever it is, whoever it’s against, in terms of his development for the future. It’s a tough decision and you never know it’s the right decision because you never know what’s going to happen five years from now.”
