Title: Rodney Cooper's late 3-pointer lifts Alabama past Oregon State 65-62
Post by: pmull on November 16, 2012, 09:30:13 AM
Good win by the Tide over Oregon State. We will play Villanova tonight at 6:30 on ESPN2. Villanova beat Purdue to advance in the winner's bracket to play Alabama.

Quote
The Crimson Tide built a 15-point lead midway through the second half and tried to coast the rest of the way, but the Beavers scrambled to tie the game on two free throws with 43 seconds left.

Rodney Cooper than sank a tie-breaking 3-point shot with 12.2 seconds left, lifting Alabama (3-0) to a 65-62 victory in the 2K Sports Classic semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

Trevor Lacey, who led Alabama with 20 points, started to drive the line on the game-winning play. When he drew defenders, he fired a pass to Cooper in the left corner. The sophomore guard sank the decisive basket with approximately 5 seconds left on the shot clock.

I made this post about the game this morning in the thread that is in Coleman.

Quote
CAG said in his interview right after the game that during the 8:00 time out he felt the team just wanted to let the clock run out. They lost their aggressiveness. I think he was dead on with that comment. He needs to fix that.

In the last 1 1/2 minute we missed two front ends of one & one free throws. The first by Steele and then Cooper. Those free throws could have sealed the win. In the future we need to hit the clutch free throws late in the game.

Lacey looked great again tonight. He is healthy this year. It makes a difference. Releford was just being Releford. Another solid game. He gets more points in the paint than most 7 footers. Big shot by Cooper.

I'm not sure how good Oregon State is but they have 4 staters and the 6th man back from a team that made a deep run in the NIT last year. I think they will be a top 100 team which will help our RPI later on in the season.

Over all good win by the Tide. We are 3-0. We need to get # 4 tonight.

RollTide.

I saw the game and you have a good synopsis of it. We were able to limit our turnovers, but OSU had at least 20, which was huge for us. Plus, we had a huge game in the paint and Releford coming off the bench seems to be a good idea. I wonder why Gueye was so limited in his playing time and we need to get Jacobs going under the basket. I think he can be a factor there and all around the basket. As far as Grant's comment about the team pulling back and losing its aggressiveness, did he tell the team to pull back?

CAG did not tell the team to pull back. He said at the 8:00 time out break he sensed the team just wanted to get the game over. He said the team is young and staying agressive is something they will need to work on. He was not happy they did not finish when they had a 15 point lead.

I think Jacobs ankle is still bothering him. He only played a few minutes at a time. We need him bad.

I thought the Big Swede played well. He got a couple baskets, rebounds well and plays defense. He fouled out with about 2 minutes to go. Gueye still has a long way to go to be very helpful IMO. He missed two point blank lay ins from right under the basket. He does not play defense as good as Engstrom IMO based on what I have seen in two games.

Defense was a factor in this game. Oregon State turned the ball over a lot because of our pressure. We held them to 62 points which is a trade mark of CAG.

Lacey is on fire. He looks like the three point shooter we have been wanting for years. He was 4-7 on 3pt and 7 of 13 overall. We were over 30% 3PT shooting for the night with Randolph getting one and Cooper geting two. We were closer to 50% if you take out a couple of last second beat the shot clock prayers.

Another tough game tonight with Villanova.

The turnovers were the difference maker.  Even without great shooting, the defense was tenacious and won the game.  Villanova is a very good team; they played last night and beat Purdue in overtime.  Hopefully that will make them a bit tired tonight versus the Tide.

I did not notice Jacobs limping, but he was not out there very long, so it must have been really bothering him. I totally agree about Engstrom. He does a solid job around the basket, getting in the the way on drives, rebounding, and intimidating the other team under the basket and any scoring he does is a huge bonus. Can't wait for the game tonight. Another good challenge for our team and let's see if we can keep hitting those 3 pointers.
