Title: Observations & Questions About the Last Drive of Alabama & LSU Post by: Marshal Dillon on November 04, 2012, 10:11:29 AM Let me set up the last drive for Alabama. We get the ball on the 28 yard line with 1:34 left in the game with no timeouts. We run 5 plays in 43 seconds to score a TD & complete a 72 yard drive.
LSU gets the ball on the 20 with 51 seconds and no timeouts. They run 3 plays and gain 9 yards and never stop the clock. My question is, does LSU never run a 2 minute offense? Who called those awful plays, Miles or someone else? The time between the first play and second play for LSU was 25 seconds off the clock. Again, did someone's brain on the sideline just turn off or freeze up? Were they so stunned by the Alabama TD they could not think and were so down they could not get it together? That series of plays by LSU is inexplicable to me. Expect some very loud calls by the LSU fans for a new OC, maybe even a new coach. I can not blame them after that pathetic last "drive" they tried to make. ??? He said every Thursday they practice the 2 minute drill as a team. He pointed out they practice ones vs ones or best on best. So we practice both offense and defense two minute drills. On Friday he meets with AJ and the QB's. One thing they discuss and review film of is the two minute drill. He said LSU defense did exactly what they expected on two minute defense.
CNS also pointed out we scored our second TD on a two minute drill to end the first half. That is 14 of our 21 points. I would say we were prepaired and executed better than LSU at the end of both halfs. Title: Re: Observations & Questions About the Last Drive of Alabama & LSU Post by: McBaman on November 04, 2012, 12:19:28 PM There is a lot of talk about how offenses handle the 2-min. Rightfully so. But there needs to be some talk about defense in the 2-min. Our D knew the game wasn't over in those last :40 secs. They never let up and they kept the LSU guys in bounds. Big stuff.
This is not Bama's first win with the 2-min. Remember JPW to Mike McCoy against Arky (I think it was Arky) 4 - 5 years ago?? It ain't over 'till it's over! What does Miles and LSU do on Thursday & Friday, eat pizza and discuss the various flavors of grass he likes to eat? ??? Title: Re: Observations & Questions About the Last Drive of Alabama & LSU Post by: Jamos on November 04, 2012, 02:19:18 PM This was a game where the coaches played a huge role in who won and who lost and the whole nation was watching.
Title: Re: Observations & Questions About the Last Drive of Alabama & LSU Post by: bama87 on November 04, 2012, 02:38:03 PM All good points. I don't think LSU could rap their heads around what just happened to them.
Also I would like to see us run a bit more uptempo at times. We finally started clicking T the end of both halves. Also TJY is the real deal. He chipped the rusher and di not get knock off balance. Why would you try a fake field goal on 4th and 12 instead of just kicking it for probable points? Why would you attempt a 54 yard field goal (that fell short and set us up beautifully to score right before halftime) instead of punting to pin us deep when you wouldn't kick it on 4th and 12? Why did they just run the ball on the last 2 plays of their next to last possession, seemingly conceding an attempt to try to get a touchdown, when a touchdown by us would have beaten them even if they had made the field goal? Sometimes I'd like to know what goes on between Miles' ears on plays like these. I'm glad we have coach who I know is prepared and puts his players in the best position to win. Title: Re: Observations & Questions About the Last Drive of Alabama & LSU Post by: hscoach on November 04, 2012, 04:06:36 PM Why would you go for it on fourth and put a running back under center and allow Bama to go to a sure run stop defense when the other had been working so successfully?

Several baffling calls to be sure, including hs coach's wildcat observation. Why would you try a fake field goal on 4th and 12 instead of just kicking it for probable points? One thing I didnt understand is why the clock stopped at 13 seconds on LSU's last drive. The runner didnt get out of bounds, there was no timeout... the runner claimed injury and quickly limped off the field... it seemed very disorganized, the opposite of Bama's last minute drives Title: Re: Observations & Questions About the Last Drive of Alabama & LSU Post by: bamaphil on November 04, 2012, 08:19:35 PM Late game clock management has long been Miles' greatest failing as a coach. The crazy stuff flattens out over time. There's no excuse for him, after all the past debacles, not having a team prepared for that situation. It's one thing if the quarterback makes a bad pass or the defense plays well enough to hold, but having a team that looks completely lost is all on the coach.
Title: Re: Observations & Questions About the Last Drive of Alabama & LSU Post by: ricky023 on November 04, 2012, 08:27:04 PM One thing is lsu plays us so hard with 2 weeks to prepare. CNS has beaten him 2 times in a row. I guess the lsu fans won't find it as bad as last time. rofl, RTR!

That's the first explanation I've heard. On another note, kudos to Kevin Norwood. He was big against LSU in the BCSCG, and big again in Bama's two-minute drives against LSU on Saturday (first half and end of game). He has a knack for running routes along the sideline and catching the ball with his feet in bounds, and he appears to be AJ's go-to guy when under the gun. Title: Re: Observations & Questions About the Last Drive of Alabama & LSU Post by: Marshal Dillon on November 06, 2012, 01:50:03 PM Anyone heard anything about who was calling plays on their last drive? Was it Miles or the OC? Also, any info on the LSU 2 minute drill preparations, if any?
