Title: ***PGA Championship thread***
Post by: 2Stater on August 09, 2012, 01:30:21 PM
The last major of the year. Leader is Petterson at -6, Daly is at -4 and Tiger at -3. Bud Cauley had 3 double bogies and a triple. He is at +7.
 :(

Phil even after 10.  He's lost his edge.

Glad to see John Daly playing well.  He did well at this year's Open for a while.

Not a real tree on the whole course. Good place for a Mai Tai.

Michael Thompson finished the day at +1. Not bad.

I think the PGA is like the Masters, if you ever win one, you can play for life.

I'd forgotten that he won the PGA (1991).  I was thinking he won the Open, then no more majors.  Sorry.   :-[

No worries, mate. Yeah, that was when he first hit the radar, the 1991 PGA championship. With everything he's been through, granted self inflicted, I would like to see him play well. The Reno tourney last week is the first in a long time where he didn't crash and burn on Sunday. Maybe there's hope for him yet.

Yep, a healthy and sober John Daly is good for the PGA.

I agree and it's so sad as to how he has squandered away a great career in golf over women, booze, and gambling. I've had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with John when he was "on the wagon" a few years back and I really enjoyed it. He played golf that afternoon at our club and then hung around and played blackjack untill the wee hours of early morning. Later on that year I was in Tuscon visiting my daughter and he was playing in the Tuscon Open (the last year it was held), and that was the tournament that the wheel ran off of his wagon Saturday night and he blew the tournament on Sunday. He was paired with Lee Janzen and Phil Mickelson that day, I really enjoyed following them.

Cool story, J.  Thanks.   #+

It was WC Fields who said it, but John probably used the line:
"I spent half my money on gambling, alcohol and wild women. The other half I just wasted.”

It's windy like crazy today.

John Daly had bogies at each of the first 3 holes.  It's tough out there.

McIlroy hit his ball into a dead tree and it stuck in the dead limb. Everybody was looking for it and the TV audience could see where it was. After the 5 minute limit was nearly up, Rory looked up and found it. I thought Gary McCord was gonna stroke out until he found the ball. Funny stuff.

That was funny.

Tiger just missed a 3' birdie - Phil-esque.   :(

Once again, Tiger just doesn't seem to have it on the weekend. Missed a 3' birdie putt, then bogeyed and is in danger of bogeying again.

He seems to have lost his temper and lost whatever edge he had yesterday.  He's now bogeyed the last 2 holes on the easy half of the course.

Seems everyone is playing well except Tiger and Phil.
Rory is ON FIRE, now at -7 and the lead.

Hope so.  He is crashing, collapsing, failing, etc.  He was right at the top, then a few slight misses sent him upside down.  Ugh.

IMHO, tiger's problem seems to be his ego.."I am the best, therefore I CANNOT hit a bad shot"
Jack, Arnold, Gary all were focused on the big picture and the game..they all could recover from a bad shot... tiger cannot recover from a bad shot..it's in his head.

I am not a tiger fan..he has no class..and I was always taught golf was a gentleman's game and was to be played with class and manners, and respect for the rules. tiger is blessed with abilities, no doubt..but he "ain't nobody special".

I'm going to watch paint dry.

I think this is Rory's to win. When he gets hot, like he did yesterday, he's hard to beat. I think he learned a huge lesson when he imploded at the Masters on Sunday a couple of years ago. He's now a pretty good front runner.

Rory with a 3 shot lead now. Look out rest of field. Off to play golf, myself. I'll check back later. Only a 20% chance of rain here today. Shhhhhh!

Tiger hit an excellent shot from the rough and has a shot a birdie.  Then he stepped on a cactus and is limping LOTS.

Vijay missed the green; he's fading?

Tiger tied for 7th.  Rory still 3 ahead of the field.

edit: Tiger got a par, but Vijay got double bogey: -2 now.

Poulter finally shows he's human and bogies to go to -7. Tiger knocks one stiff and has a 4 footer to get back to -4. McIlroy can't seem to find the fairway all of a sudden, but has scrambled well and still at -10. Tiger misses his birdie putt.

I would think during prime time tonight. The US won big in the medal count, including the golds. Total medals were 104 for the US and 46 gold. 87 for China and 38 gold.

Great job, guys and gals!  #+

I'm interested now to see what happens in his next tournaments, the last time he won a biggy he really struggled with his game afterwards. He has the makings of being one of the greatest, but he has got to get more consistency with his wins and high finishes.

True.
But this course favored the Europeans in being a links-type course.  I know it had quirks for a links course, but look how many of the Europeans scored better than others.  The cut list is FULL of Americans.
Rory is good, and I like him.  I wish him well, but I'll reserve comment until (as you said) he shows consistency.
