Does that start today?  :dunno:

I do know that it is exactly 35 days 20 hours 17 minutes and 52 seconds until football season at the exact moment I posted this though.

Of course this is just a little something to pass the time until then.

Great crescendo ending to the opening ceremonies. Great job by the Brits!  #+

He reminds me of a coach here in Tuscaloosa that used to lift a lot. He is much smaller than Jessie but he had set a few records until he lifted so much that it was actually starting to crush his spinal joints. That was the end of his weightlifting. Jessie is soooo strong and I wonder just how much he could bench if he wanted to keep stepping up the weight. It sounds pretty high risk at 600 lbs though.

No doubt the olympics can be very boring with their international sports. Girls softball would be much more entertaining to watch than some of the screwy sports allowed in the olympics.

What the hay happened to Lochty today against the French in the 400 relay? He has been critical about Phelps mailing in his training during the Olympics, then he gets passed by THE FRENCHMAN to finish 2nd! Slacker!

Coverage is coming back on tonight.  Sounds like gymnastics qualifying rounds, and swimming.  I remember watching the Olympics in the 70s, and it was track and field, boxing, some gymnastics and limited swimming, the marathon, etc.  Now it seems swimming and gymnastics have become so popular that we are even getting the qualifying rounds instead of other sports.

I didn't mind the bicycle racing.  The Americans came close to getting a medal in both men's and women's races.  In the women's race, the American woman riding with the three eventual medalists had an unfortunate flat tire or she likely would have gotten at least silver, as she is a strong sprinter.  In the men's race, American Taylor Phinney came in 4th, just outside the medals, but the strategy was executed perfectly.

Of course, I've competed in bicycle races, and ping pong, as well as more typical sports like football, baseball, golf, tennis, etc.  (I have a first place trophy from the Alabama State Championships in ping pong, as well as a couple more from my UofA days).  My wife was a competitive swimmer.  So I enjoy watching a variety of sports.  But the opening ceremony was Absolutely Boring.

Quote
The Americans, who gambled and lost when they called up Lochte ahead of their sprint specialists, held on to take the silver medal after an exhilarating finish.

I could hear the guy that works for me saying " he's flying , he's flying"
he was watching the race , I couldn't see it and didn't get a chance to
talk to him afterwards , now I know what happened ...

Me either.  There really is no interest for me now that we are the world's only super power.  I think having the Soviet Union as the evil villain all those years really unified the country, especially from a political point of view.  Now that we don't have them to deal with the country has become divisive to the point that it is utterly dysfunctional.  Who knew we needed them in place to keep us on our toes?

It's funny that you say that ricky, because I read a story earlier this week that said some congressman is trying to get a bill passed that would allow medal winners not to be taxes for their winnings.

The US athletes have delivered 54 Gold Medals, and now they lead all other nations.  We're finally past most of those Chinese diving "contests", so maybe we can stay ahead from here on.  Certainly there can't be many top track-and-field athletes from China!

Men's beach volleyball is over for the Americans. Neither team fared well. :(

On a happier note, the ladies soccer team beat Canada with a goal coming at 32 seconds remaining in OT, 4-3.

Americans are starting to heat up in track & field. American, Suhr, ended Russia's dominance in the women's pole vault by taking gold.

Medal count: China-64, US-63.

WTH?  I turn on the Olympics tonight, and it's STILL diving competitions.  No wonder the Chinese are winning the gold-medal total.

12 of their medals are in diving.

BTW, we're ahead 81-77 FINALLY!  :jump:

Wooot! It was 75-71 China, last I'd heard.

Indeed.  They aren't the lovelies they were a few years ago, but they held it together and won the gold.  Kudos.   :-*

OMG, did you see the Kenyan (David Rudisha), a Masai Warrier, win the gold in world record time?  The guy was great (and modest).  Great race (800m).

Incredible.  His father won the silver medal in 1968.  Cool.   :tinfoil:

The US is starting to pull away in the medal count. We have 90 to China's 80 and we also lead 39-37 in gold medals.

Thanks for the update.
I watched the women field hockey this morning.  We won't be taking home a medal in fh.
I coached fh in Virginia for a year (1978).  I know we have better talent out there for Rio 2016.

I am glad you said that Chech. When I lived in Maryland a few years ago, I saw some amazing play up there. When I saw how badly our team was performing, I wondered what the deal was.

I'm willing to coach them if I need to.  Really, I'll do it.  I'll be in Rio anyhow, so what the heck!!   :dunno:

Talk about your multi-tasking, you can guzzle beer and coach women's field hockey at the same time?

When I have more time, I'll post about a beer drinking contest I was a part of on a cruise ship. Let's just say for now that I can hold up my end of the bargain.  ;)

Medal count update:

USA leads China 94-81 (and pulling away).  Not many sprinters in China, perhaps due to centuries of torturous foot binding!

Foot binding (simplified Chinese: 缠足; traditional Chinese: 纏足; Mandarin Pinyin: chánzú; Jyutping: gwo2 goek3; literally "bound feet" or Chinese: 縛腳; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: pa̍k-kha) is the custom of binding the feet of young girls painfully tight to prevent further growth.

Looking good. Did you catch the women's 400M relay last night? The US set a WR and smoked the field.

We win the Olympics!

Defeating a country of a billion people who begin to train athletes when they are in diapers.

Not bad, USA.

Um, LF and I tuned in the "Closing Ceremonies" just now and we're watching men walk around on garbage cans, people sweeping the floor in unison, and a bunch of folks covered in newspaper.

WTH?  Very odd, even for the Brits!
