Title: Georgia RB Crowell Picks New College to Enroll
Post by: Marshal Dillon on July 09, 2012, 01:45:45 PM
How did I miss this story? It must be posted somewhere on our boards, but I sure missed it. My next question is, why there, unless he doesn't have to study.

My only guess is he did not want to sit out a year. There are other Div II schools but Alabama St and Alabama A&M are well respected in the SWAC.

Alabama St moves into their new on campus stadium later this year. I think around Thanksgiving. You can see it taking shape from I-85 in Montgomery. It looks pretty nice from what I could see.

It does look nice. It looks like it is near completion. I guess they got tired of playing at Cramton Bowl.

That and the ability to play immediately make sense.

I'm watching the 2011 USCe-UGA game now.  Crowell was a force in that game.

Alabama State does send players to the NFL, maybe 22 total over the years.  I also think that a lot of schools didn't want this criminal.

Maybe ASU allows concealed-weapon permits.

LOL! Good point. I don't think we have heard the last of Crowell or should I say the police have not heard the last of him.

I just read this article about Vince Dooley saying he thinks UGA did the right thing kicking Crowell off the team. What surprised me was the article said UGA is down to under 70 scholarship players. Those are probation numbers. It is hard to build depth with those numbers.

Quote
Georgia, of course, is generally considered the favorite to repeat as the SEC Eastern Division champions and play in the SEC Championship. That is, if the Bulldogs are still able to field a team. With Crowell out and linebacker Brandon Burrows’ recent decision to transfer in search of more playing time, Georgia has dipped below 70 scholarship players heading into next season. The NCAA allows 85.

He would have been at UNA if the Tot were still there.

Those are some surprising numbers.  Richt should be better than than.

I think Tuberville did the same thing to Auburn. I think they had 64 scholarship players in Chiznik's first year. Tuberville, and now apparently Richt, would recruit academically borderline players or problem children who either dropped out, got the boot, or left the program early. Remember how Tuberville was turkey hunting while Saban was out recruiting? Richt is digging his own grave.

Title: "Vince Dooley: losing Crowell was ‘the best thing’ for UGA"

...“I don’t want to put any pressure on them, but losing that guy may have been the best thing to happen to them,” former UGA coach and athletic director Vince Dooley told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It was a bad-apple type thing, if you ask me.

“That kind of thing will unite a team many times. Historically when things like this have happened in the past, they tend to have a unifying effect on teams. They go on to have an even better season than they were predicted to have.”

Dooley certainly has a point that any team is better off getting rid of a knucklehead, but as the AJC also notes, Georgia is now running below 70 scholarship players heading into this season....

Hey Cat, we have this lionk being discussed on my original thread about Crowell going to a new college. See if you can combine these, plus you can read my usual brilliant remarks about the article.

Does he leave on his own or get booted for misconduct/arrests?

Ever been to ASU or anywhere in Montgomery, for that matter? Everyone needs a gun. He'll fit right in, there.

He had to find a school that did not have a Pitch this Tent qualifier.
