Bummer.
I have good memories of that place back in the early 70s.  I used to have a meal contract there (been a while, though).

Does 43 years make this an "aging" building?

I know.  They'll be planting demolition charges inside us soon!  :(

I though the same OT, but if you have seen some of the new dorms that are going up on campus now, they make Rose look like they were built in the Stone Ages.

You may be interested to know that the newer ones will have an even shorter life. Moreover they are built specifically with the idea that they will be easy to put and easy to take down. They are, for all practical purposes, disposable dorms.  Kids want shiny new dorms so we must give them what they want. This info should be equally appalling to liberal environmental types and fiscal conservatives.

It's true.  I dated one of them.

No one wants to live in the older style doors anymore. Kids that live on campus want the "cluster style" housing.

Haven't been in Rose Towers since about '96 when my sister lived there...I thought it was super nice for dorm living back in those days.

I helped prewire Rose Tower for the telephones and remember that the sheet rockers cut a bunch of our lines as they did their jobs. We had no way of knowing this until folks started moving in and what a mess we had in getting them phone service.

Maybe somebody can help me with this, but wasn't Rose Tower initially built to house married couples that were in school.

When you are growing like the University of Alabama you have to make room. The memories will never be lost but more bricks will replace the old ones. RTR!

I think so, J. Someone else correct me if I am wrong, but I think they built some new housing for married couples over near ten Hoor and then Rose became open to any student.

Yes, as I recall, in 1969 it was for married students only.

I wish I could drive down and see it.  Would beat any 4th fireworks show in the area.

Rose Towers is now notjing more than a pile of rubble and a big cloud of dust. It took 10 seconds or less for the building to come down but it took months for it to be built.

It was built after I graduated,

Makes me feel kind of out of date. :(

I think the problem with these older buildings has everything to do with them being out-of- date for certain modern needs and concepts. They probably did not have fiber optic cable, were not energy efficient, had limited bathroom facilities, no wi-fi, and the cost of maintaining them had become prohibitive and the cost of updating them would cost more than a new building. I have seen this in a lot of buildings that have been demolished due to the onset of so much technology and energy concerns.

I lived in Rose in the early 80s.  We often had the fire alarm go off when someone put a burning item (cigs?) down the garbage chute.
