Tide’s disappointing start a blessing in disguise
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- There was something off about Nick Saban's demeanor following Saturday's season opener. He sounded too calm, too collected in the aftermath of the Alabama's 35-10 win over Virginia Tech. It wasn't that he was disinterested, but his post-game comments lacked the fervor we've become accustomed to when his teams don't play up to par, which was the case even though the scoreboard inside the Georgia Dome might have indicated otherwise.

In the end, it was hard to tell whether there was more good or bad to come from the season opener. But maybe that was for the best. The defense looked good and so did the special teams, but having every phase of the team running on all cylinders would have made for a boring lead up to what could be the most anticipated game of the season.

Disgruntled though he may be, Saban was able to see the silver lining. A day removed from his rant to the media, he put the game in perspective, saying it was a relief to have his players see they weren't as good as they thought they were. ...

Coach Stallings was at his best when his teams won by a small margin, but won consistently.  Hopefully this VT win will open the eyes of players, as suggested above, and propel them as champions.

I believe we will see a drastic change from game 1 to game 2. If we come out disinterested on offense against aTm, then we deserve to lose. But I do not see that happening, I believe the intensity in practice will increase throughout the week next week and we'll see a team ready to blow apart at the seams by game time. I predicted earlier that Bama will win by at least 2 TD's, I truly believe they will.

Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesNick Saban wants better execution from several areas when Alabama plays Texas A&M.
"Nobody wants to be obedient," he said. "Nobody wants to pay attention to rules or whatever. When you make a rule you've got to have your dog on a leash, somebody wants to have their dog not on a leash. That's the way it is.

"We can't have a team of people like that."

This is what worries me the most.   It sounds like some players are being coachable at this point.

Gotta agree with hscoach on this point.  Don't think I ever saw so many Bama players who looked confused/lost as in the VT game.

The motivation to get it right has to come from within the players.  FEAR can be a great motivator.  Fear of loosing... fear of not living up to the standard of previous Bama teams... fear of the wrath of CNS.  Maybe some of the ass't coaches also need to feel some fear, as in fear of loosing my job!

Sounds like you guys agree with the premise of the feature article: blessing in disguise!

Enjoy the game.  I believe we've got this one.

A 25 point win over a quality opponent but look sluggish. We get a nice win but it gives the staff plenty to work on during the off week and they will have no problem getting the players attention.

No one (fans or players) was excited about the VT game. Everyone has been looking forward to and talking about A&M all summer. CNS will have the team ready to play on the 14th.
