No less than eight times that season he started the game with the second unit, let them play a quarter, and then put in the starters. The practice tended to completely demoralize the opposition.

Good stuff. I know CPB gets most of the attention, but CWW and CFT deserve a great deal of the credit for establishing THE Tradition.

Back in the 1970's Coach Wallace Wade was at a Tide practice. Coach Bryant pointed out Coach Wade to his players and told them (paraphrasing), "there's the man who started the Alabama football tradition."
