For those that did not see the final few holes of The British Open.

A Scott birdied 14 to take a 4 shot lead with 4 to play. On 15 he lipped out a very short par putt for a 3 putt bogie. He rolled into a green side bunker on 16. He had a poor stance and hit a decent sand shot to about 10 feet. He burnt the edge of the cup with his par putt for another bogie. On 17 he missed the green and the ball rolled into a terrible lie just beside the green. The grass was about a foot deep and thick. He did good just to hit the green with his 3rd shot and two putted for bogie. The Els roar came about this time when Ernie birdied 18. AS went to the 18th tee tied for the lead. His 3 wood off the tee found a pot bunker. He had to chip out side ways. He hit a good third shot to about 8 ft. He hit a good putt that he thought was going in but it burnt the edge of the hole for his 4 bogie in 4 holes.

I felt bad for A Scott. He played great for 68 holes but I was glad to see Ernie get the win.

Thanks for the recap, P, I missed all but the last hole. I'm glad Ernie won, but I hate to think of the devastation that Scott feels right now. This was Van Velde de ja vu. I hope he does better than most and can get past this.

Adam Scott joins a long list of those who have lost majors after having them in hand.

What Scott did today wilts in comparison to Van de Velde, though (1999).

That almost seems impossible for the Pros but it happened.

Perhaps I exaggerated comparing this to Van de Velde, but you wouldn't be able to convince Adam Scott otherwise. The big difference here is that most people will remember that Ernie won this one. Most people don't remember who won against Van de Velde. (Paul Lawrie)

Sorry, dude, didn't mean to demean your comparison.  While eating sandwiches at "the house" today we discussed VdV's meltdown.  My buddy googled it on his SmartPhone to get his name and the year, and we had a laugh at the details.  That's why it was on my mind too; your mention reminded me.  And I didn't remember who "won" the OPEN that VdV gave away.    Thanks.

It seems the biggest meltdowns or shortcomings from a frontrunner happens more at the British Open than the other majors. Or is it just me?

I didn't take offense, no worries, but technically you are right, VdV had a 3 stroke lead with one to play. AS had a 4 stroke lead with 4 to play. VdV's collapse was the most monumental. Norman had some pretty memorable beatings, too, most notably going into the final round of the Masters with a 6 stroke lead, only to lose to Faldo.

Then there was Phil at the US Open.  He got a double bogey on the final hole and lost!  Pretty bad.

All because he went with driver when he didn't have too. But I've always admired Phil, because he never plays safe. He's always going after it. It cost him that time, however.

Hey, glad I could do my part. I have been addicted to watching golf since Arnie was a Cub Scout and addicted to playing since I was 32 yrs old. It's the only sport that the outcome can't be dictated by officiating. Maybe we can go golf for fish soon.  Cheesy

thanks bud !  we sure do need to hook up and do one or the other
not sure you could stand my golfing , the fishing part I got down pat .

golf is not so bad , once I gave it a chance anyway ...
the money they win is crazy and the no officiating interference is
always a big plus .

I saw Tiger jump back on one of the holes where he hit it in a sand trap
I thought he was just afraid of the ball
I had no idea that if the ball touched him it was a bad thing  ...

the course over there looks , ummm , looks .... well ...
imo .... like crap , maybe I'm wrong and I'm not well versed in
course grading but that one looks hillbillyish ... like it is in some
crappy part of Tennessee where banjo music is a staple ...

Links golf courses like that one are all through the UK. they are undulating and have tall grass and pot bunkers to deal with and typically large greens. They do look much different than most courses in the US.

LF and I visited St Andrews.  We couldn't play, but I borrowed a putter and walked out onto the 18th green and putted for a photo.  That's my experience with links...

Those British folks are pretty smart though, they are renouned for their courses. They took all of those battlefields with the blasted holes in the ground, spent a few thousand dollars on 18 greens and tee boxes, mowed a narrowed stretch of grass from the tee box to the green, let the rest of the grass grow at will, and then put a name on it and that is golf in Great Britain. It is very cheap to maintain their courses.

This might not be a bad idea for some of these country clubs in America that are fighting to keep their doors open. Wink

this makes me believe my "cow pasture pool" analogy is closer to
right than I thought ....
