Title: Why I am an Alabama fan.
Post by: hscoach on November 22, 2013, 12:47:59 PM
There are reasons beside winning that I am an Alabama fan.  First, the program.  The Alabama program is something any fan of football can be proud of.  Coach Saban and his staff have continued to hold their players to a higher standard and make them accountable for their actions.  This is not always the case, especially in society/schools today.  They are also there to dole out praise when the players do what is right.  Second, I am proud of how the program prepares these young men for the future.  In this program you are not entitled to playing time for your achievements in high school, you earn the right to play.  In society many times you have to earn your place.  Third, the players can't be paid, but they are rewarded by having some of the best facilities in the NCAA.  In a sense they have earned this through their hard work which is driven by their coaches.  Finally, I do like winning.

Proud to be a BAMA fan. Being a BAMA fan has the trickle down effect, whereas we as fans try also to do things the right way. It seems like most programs are trying to duplicate the way we do things: THE RIGHT WAY! ROLL TIDE!

Were you a fan during the Shula and Dubose years?

I have been an Alabama fan since I woke up one day back in the middle 1960's and Alabama was playing Tenn. on TV. Chris Economaki was introducing the first games I ever heard. I have been a fan thru good and bad ever since. RTR!

Wow, Preacher, it's been a long time since I heard his name. That was back in the day with Jack Whitaker, Chris Schenkel, Jim McKay, and Lindsey Nelson. And then came the greatest ever to announce a football game, Keith Jackson. Those were good times back then.

And a great man took that name and was forever known as Ali Bamuh.

My first visit to the campus was in 1956,,visiting my uncle who was in school(ME).
Then when I played FB in Jr high and HS, I always read the write ups about the games in my local paper..I was hooked on the U of A...and yes, I have always been a fan thru the bad yrs too...can't say I was always happy, but still a fan.

Camped out at Foster night before the tickets went on sale..went to all home games, and most away games, 1963-67..sat in the rain at Legion Field, put on sport coat and ties, wife got dressed to the nines for each game..sometimes went to the "Cotton Patch" after a home game..went to "married students dances" after games,
laughed at the antics of Shorty Price..sneaked in a pint of JD or JB once in a while, played pick up BB games on Sunday pms with Joe at the old Ed. Dept gym (about where student center is now), went fishing with Creed Gilmer and Joel White...went deer hunting (at night, don't ask) with Les Kelley and others...played golf with Steve Sloan..suffered thru 5 yrs of beat downs by UT when I grad'd and went to Chatt to work..cried when CPBB died..never liked Ray P. but still a fan..wished the best for Dubose..still a fan..was glad to see Coach Gene come back..did not like Fran, still a fan, wished the best for Shula, (he was "unseasoned") but still a fan..anguished over the Mike P. clusterf.   still a fan.. was unsure about CNS when he first came..still a fan.

STILL A FAN..ALWAYS WILL BE!

BAMA BORN AND BAMA BRED, WHEN I'M GONE, I'LL BE BAMA DEAD!

I hope it isn't sacrilegious to say so but... I was thinking that maybe our All-powerful Father in Heaven might just be a Bama fan too.  Afterall, he did create us with blood the color "Crimson" for a reason didn't he?   ;)

Well, let's see:

1. Born and raised in Northport, just minutes from campus.
2. Every member of my family is a Bama fan. I get it honest.
3. 1999 grad of the U of A.
4. I believe in "acting like you've been there before."
5. I believe in "always keep your heads up and act like champions."
6. I believe in "winning with class."
7. I believe in "winning isn't everything, but it sure beats coming in second."
8. HE was "nothin' but a winner."
9. I believe in "THE PROCESS."
10. 15 national championships, 60 bowl appearances, 35 bowl wins, 27 conference titles

Need any more reasons? RTR!!!

I posted once about this 2 years ago in a similar thread, but I became an Alabama fan when I was a little kid living in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl, long before we moved to Montgomery.

My grandfather on my mother's side was absolutely my idol. We would go visit him in Hattiesburg, Ms every summer or fall. In the fall, if there was a Bama game on, he would be in front of that TV cheering the Tide on. I asked him one time why he like Bama so much. This is a man that was born in 1887.

He told me that ever since the Civil war, the North had always looked down on the South as being a bunch of uneducated, dirt poor, worthless nothings, inferior to the North in every way. In the 1926 Rose Bowl, a bunch of country kids from Alabama, not the Rose Bowl's first choice, played and beat a heavily favored Washington team.

The South took notice, including my grandfather. There was something that the entire South could hang their hat on, not just people from Alabama.

My grandfather became an Alabama fan on that day in 1926, and was until the day he died in 1975.

The day he told me that story, I became an Alabama fan and will be until the day I die.

Born in the early 50's in Alabama. Dad smoked Chesterfields and wore a houndstooth hat. I think I was born loving BAMA football!

Born in the old Druid City Hospital on the campus.  You can't get much closer than that.  Father was a UA professor and mother a UA graduate.

1. Born in Birmingham, raised there, Decatur, & in Centerpoint.
2. Attended first game as teenager with dad & uncle in 1967. Alabama/Ole Miss at Legion Field.
3. Watched live as Alabama played & lost to Notre Dame in 1973 at 3 am in the morning while serving in the Army in Germany (snowing & cold night).
4. Most importantly, son & daughter are Tide fans, especially son. The tradition carries on.
5. Saw Ali/Foreman fight live in Germany. (Throwing that in to make everyone jealous)

Good stuff. These are the most important things to remember in my opinion. Remember, it's just a game.

Do you remember the smoke bomb being thrown into the end zone? Or the Ole Miss fans constantly saying, "go to hell Alabama, go to hell." At the time it was scandalous.

I will never forget it. My dad took my cousin and me to the game. When they were chanting that, my dad saw me looking up at him. He looked down at me and said "Eff 'em".  :lol2:
