The Alabama men's basketball team will continue Southeastern Conference play when it travels to square off against Mississippi State on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. CT.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge of going on the road again at Mississippi State,” UA head coach Anthony Grant said. “Obviously, Mississippi State has gotten off to a great start, 2-0 in the league. They had a great home win against South Carolina and then going on the road at Georgia and getting a win there. I’ve been very impressed watching them on film. They’ve got a lot of young guys who are doing an outstanding job, you look at the way they’re defending and the way they are winning ballgames. Coach (Rick) Ray and his staff have done a great job of getting those guys acclimated to his system, getting the experience they need and playing very good basketball right now at an extremely high confidence level. For our team, we are coming off a good win here at home against Tennessee so we’ve got to take the momentum, experiences and everything we learned from that game and try to carry it over as we go on the road.”

The Crimson Tide (9-6, 1-1 SEC) is coming off a 68-65 victory over Tennessee last Saturday in UA’s first home conference game of the season. Junior guard Trevor Releford and sophomore guard Trevor Lacey led the Tide with 15 points each, while sophomore guard Levi Randolph had 12 points and six rebounds in the win. Senior guard Andrew Steele added 11 points and a season-high four steals.

Miss State is always hard to beat at home. However, this is not a typical Miss State team. They are 2-0 in SEC play but USCe and UGA are both 0-2. Miss has an overall 7-7 record with very bad losses to Troy and Alabama A&M. Miss State has an RPI of 225. Our RPI is 73. It should be a good game.

If you did not see in in another thread Releford is doubtful.

I don't think it is available on DirecTV. It is listed on the channel finder by cable only in Decatur. You may be able to get it on ESPN3.

OK I heard on the news on CBS42 that Releford was injured and not sure he would get to play? If so, then this is killer. RTR!

Yep, he has a sprained ankle I believe.  I don't think he will be out long but he will probably miss this game.

It'll be interesting to see how Levi Randolph responds tonight. For a couple of seasons I've been waiting for him to kick his game up a notch. He has been a good defender, rebounds well for his size, and has a great basketball sense or feel for the ball. Anytime there is a big scramble for a tipped or loose ball, Levi is somewhere around. He has a tendency to look for someone to feed when he has the ball, rather than taking it to the goal himself or working for a shot on his own. I always thought he would "grow out of that" but he has not. Maybe putting the ball in his hands at the point may force him into a larger role in our offense. RTR to LR.

The last two games have been good games for Levi. In the Tenn game he didn't shoot the long ball as well as he did the game before but he made up for that with his overall play, he is "Charlie Hustle" on this team. If he was a little taller he would be a killer on the boards. I think Levi has some good games ahead for him, he's very consistant with his overall game and he's only a soph.

Bama by 4 w/3 minutes left in half. Fom the start it looked like Cooper was going to be more involved. He, Jacobs and Randolph are playing well. This first half is what I've been looking for out of this team. Of course, we are missing Releford and his driving ability.

Alabama 30
Miss St   22 (half)
 L. Randolph 11 Pts, 5 Reb, 1 Stl, 1 Blk
 R. Cooper 7 Pts, 4 Reb
 N. Jacobs 8 Pts

Bama out rebounding State 19-11. MSU was shooting above 50% beyond the arc early on, but as their shooting dropped back to normal the Tide went on top to lead by 8. Lacey hasn't been a factor as yet (0-2). Cooper and Jacobs playing well. Randolph on his way to having his career game. Gueye chop blocked Pollard and dang near killed him,-- other than that he has a tip in for--oh wait--     nevermind.

Lacey with back to back to back 3s (he now has 9 pts.). Bama with a 17 pt lead to try and steal one in Starkville.

Bama came out smokin' in the second half.

With 6 1/2 min. into the half the push their lead to 51-27.

Wow, Lacey is on fire behind the 3 point line.
He went 3 for 3 on 3s in the first minute or so to start the 2nd half. They now lead by 31, but LKacey is NOT the story tonight. We are getting scoring from all directions. Cooper has been wearing his man out. Randolph has at least 18 and Jacobs is ruling the lane. RTR

Bama shot lights out-- waaay over their heads. With everyone NOT sitting around waiting on Releford and Lacey to score, a new Bama team emerged.
Randolph finished with 18 pts, Jacobs with at least 11 rebs. and in double figures, Cooper with maybe his best game. Lacey started the 2nd half with 3 three pointers to fire up the Tide during a long MSU drought. Best game of the year as a team. JMHO

BTW, the ESPN box score has gone wacko so I can't see the final stats yet.

WOW!  I did not see this coming.  As you said, having Releford out may have forced the rest of the guys to step up.  Now we know what they are capable of.

It was a good win for Bama but State isn't that good. After playing so many close games, it was good for the team to be able to play a little loose and enjoy themselves for a change.

This Saturday against Texas A&M will be a different story though. Bama has a chance to really better their image this year if they can beat the Aggies. Hopefully Releford will be ready to go Saturday's game and the momentum from last nights game will carry over.

Great effort and win by Bama last night. Miss State is not that good but they entered the game 2-0 in SEC play so I expected a good game. Bama finished the 1st half strong and game out in the 2nd half on fire. Lacey hit three 3's with Cooper and Randolph hitting one each extenting the lead to 23 before State scored a point. It was over at that point.

Miss State was very solf in the paint. Jacobs played well and had a double/double. We need more of that from him. Jacobs struggles with the taller more physical teams but he is getting better each game. I think the angle injury in preseason practice slowed him down and the reason for his slow start to the season. We out rebounded State 35-23. we got 13 offensive rebounds. Randolph had 8 boards.

This win should give the team some confidence. There will be nights we struggle but we can still finish in the top half of the SEC.

Texas A&M comes to Tuscaloosa Saturday. They will be a difficult match up for us. Hopefully Releford will be back.

I gathered from a CAG interview last night that Releford was held out purely as a precautionary measure. I would imagine he is practicing this afternoon.

There has been a lot of disappointment in Nick Jacobs play this year. In the last two weeks he is starting to look like the player we expected.

In an early game this year (Dayton I believe) Wimp Sanderson said he was having to overcome an ankle injury that had limited his practice time. He even said he looked out of shape. Cecil Hurt's column today said Jacobs is trying to play his way back into shape and he has dropped 13 lbs from 276 to 263.

If Jacobs can score 8-12 pts per game and rebound it will help our perimeter players a lot.

I posted at the beginning of this thread on how we need a big night from Randolph and that he needed to produce some offense against the Dawgs in order for Bama to succeed. I've posted his final stats but again, he had 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, and 3 steals. He was 2-2 on 3s and had 0 personal fouls. He had a big game last year against MSU, but this was, JMO, his best game in a Tide uniform.

What I didn't see coming was Jacobs coming into his own. This was not the best front court we will face but he out positioned and out muscled MSU and came away with 16 points and 11 'bounds in only 27 minutes. Cooper shot well (3-5 on 3s) and finished with 16 points in only 26 minutes of play.  Steele played flat and did not really contribute, as with Gueye. Pollard finished with 7 but did not help much on the boards, but he put exclaimation marks on the Bama win with a couple of thunder dunks.

All-in-all it shows the potential in this years team and what a balanced offensive attack can do to a defense! RTR
