Title: CBS ends relationship with SEC after 2023 season

Quote
It appears the days of the “SEC on CBS” are numbered. Sports Business Journal Daily is reporting that CBS is walking away from the bidding war for the package after the 2023 season.

According to John Ourand and Michael Smith, CBS’s bid was in the neighborhood of $300 million per year to broadcast the weekly top conference game. The network pays $55 million per year under the current agreement. The bidding is now “well over” $300 million according to the report.

“We made a strong and responsible bid. While we‘ve had success with the SEC on CBS, we are instead choosing to aggressively focus on other important strategic priorities moving forward,” CBS Sports PR told SBJ.

B-bye Gary!

The recent Viacom-CBS 'merger' deal may have something to do with this.  New execs in charge that don't want to take on that much of a financial commitment.  If ESPN is the winning bidder, wouldn't surprise me if they buy out CBS a year or two early.  Would save CBS a lot of $$$$.

The contract they are under now is only for $55 million. I would actually be surprised if they did that. ESPN would need to pony up a lot for that to happen, IMO.

CBS bid up to $300 million/year for a property they currently are paying $55 million/year.  I don't see them letting that go.

No surprise.  ESPN/ABC has been wanting that premier SEC game for years.  Now they won't have to wait on CBS to make its pick.

I have enjoyed the SEC top game of the week starting in the 2:30 time slot as opposed to a night game. ESPN/ABC will move the big games to prime time I suspect. Night games are fun to attend but the drive home is no fun.

I agree with that 1000%.  Especially the part about driving home...

Not so fast!  We can't get rid of Gary that easy.  I'm sure CBS will still show a game.  Maybe they get second pick now.  So now maybe our games that would have been on ESPN will be on CBS, and our games that would have been on CBS will be on ESPN.  :dunno:
