Title: SABAN ON ADDING AN EXTRA ASSISTANT COACH
Post by: Jamos on October 07, 2015, 07:54:00 PM
Asked if he was in favor of adding an extra assistant coach on the field in order to have a coach specifically work with the specialists, Saban gave a swift, straightforward answer.

No doubt,” Saban said. “I’d love it. I think it’d be great. I think that having a 10th coach so that you can have nine assistants and a special teams coach would be a real asset to the players and to the staff. So hopefully someday we’ll be able to do that.”

Saban also shared some strong, personal thoughts on graduate assistants and how they would be affected if an additional assistant coach was added to teams’ coaching staffs.

“I like the idea of having four GAs so sometimes when we add something, we think we’ve gotta subtract something else,” Saban said. “But I wouldn’t be for that because it creates a lot of opportunities for young people to sort of be able to develop in the business.

“I probably would have never been a coach if I wasn’t asked to be a graduate assistant by Don James at Kent State after my senior year.”

A lot of folks were pretty hard on assistant Bobby Williams recently for the bad performances by the special teams. Maybe this will answer some of those that thought Williams was all the blame for the special teams. By not having a special teams coach though, you have to wonder how they are prepared each week. Maybe all the coaches have a say in who plays on it and who doesn't. :dunno:

Williams should be getting a lot of credit for the Georgia game. Special teams were great.

I'm surprised that Coach Saban has so many starters play on special teams.
Alabama has SO MUCH TALENT that you'd think we'd do what most NFL teams do; use the rookies on special teams.
Coach Saban has said he 'wants the best players' on special teams, but you'd think those who usually sit out the games could prepare and practice more than those who start, overshadowing any lesser talent.
Plus, we've had some bonehead plays by our special teams' players, which might be avoided if we had better preparation or more practice by each player.

You can bet your bottom dollar if CNS wanted an additional assistant coach or more grad assistants, he'd get them. I don't think he's denied much of anything.

Yeah, nothing like having one good special teams game in 2 years. Give him a 5 year extension.

So Alabama needs a "strength and conditioner" coach roaming the sidelines basically acting as a high paid cheerleader but the special team's coach can't even though he could actually be coaching his kicker's and other persons?  Not sure I understand the thought process behind that...

The number of coaches is limited by the NCAA.  CNS chooses how he wants to fill those spots, and apparently he thinks it is a better approach to have special teams by committee and have all of the other dedicated position coaches that he has.  I can't argue with the results.  To have a special teams coach, he would have to give up one of the other position coaches.  Then we might all be complaining about how that position group is not up to the standard.

Personally, I think he says that to take the heat off Williams. I have seem on more than one occasion after a special teams snafu, Saban goes straight to Williams & is yelling at him. I guess he's telling Williams to go yell at the other committee members.

It's a start, and better than anything we've had in 5 years, Hey, maybe he found something. If it doesn't work out this weekend, maybe you can volunteer for the position.

I don't think either one of us could do worse than Williams. Special Teams have been pretty much a wreck under his tutelage & we all know that, plus thanks for acknowledging the years of incompetence of Williams, but I think it's more like 7-8 years, but I won't quibble about how long Williams has been a disaster. I wonder how much the job pays?

Watching the games for free. Would be worth it.

Look, I'm not a fan of Williams either and have stated so on here before, but I always give credit where credit is due, and the special teams rose to the occasion Saturday. Sometimes we are always quick to be critical of somebody when things go bad, but don't always recognize them when things go right. He had his day in the sun....er, rain, on Saturday and I'm just acknowledging it. I hope we have many more Saturdays just like it.
