Title: the computer Gods hate me ! HELP !
Post by: XBAMA on February 25, 2012, 09:47:30 PM
about four days ago I'm setting in my recliner surfing the CRS and my laptop shuts down ...
it acted like the battery went dead but it was plugged in to the wall
it's a Alienware and was very expensive and only about a year and a half old

so I drag out the old back up , a Toshiba Satellite
it;s a good computer but no where near as good as the AW
so I'm surfing the web and it gives me the low battery warning and goes off
almost the same way the AW did ...

I call my computer tech guy and tell him what happened
he won't touch the AW  and tells me it's the battery
go to Ebay and buy one

today is Saturday and I'm calling around trying to get someone to look
at the AW but no one is open
so I'm a little disgusted at this point so I make the decision

I go buy a Dell laptop to use until I can get the AW fixed
this is where it gets stupid

I get the Dell home , before hand I'd been on it at the store , it worked great
stopped on the way home used it at a free wi-fi restaurant worked great

so I set down in my recliner and plug the Dell in and start surfing
on it for 20 to 30 minutes and thats when it happened
low battery warning and it shuts off

WTH ?

then I go pay 80 bucks for a new power supply but no luck
they all still do the same thing
I go borrow a power supply from a friend , no luck

when you hook the power cord up the power light will come on
then it goes out , then it comes back on , then it goes off
 ON ALL OF THEM

will not power up though ... what the heck ???

I've tried taking the batteries out , while unplugged and
held the power button down till I'm blue in the face and then put it all back tried to power them up ... no luck

I'm about to puke at this point , any ideas guys ????

Are you sure the outlet is good?  Plug a lamp into it and see if it works.  The breaker could be tripped for that outlet or something.

lamp works in both plugs on the outlet , me and the wife were
talking and we wondered if there is a way it is putting out too much juice ?

Naw Sir I don't think your receptacle is putting out to much power. Sounds like there maybe a loose neutral at your plug make sure all the screws are tight. RTR!

thanks Ricky , I'm scared to death of electricity so I won't be messing with
any plug in's or whatnot ...

I got the Dell I bought up and running and the Toshiba is working a little
but it keeps shutting  off and the AlienWare is still looking for someone that
will work on it ... but I'm online , more like a chisel and a stone tablet compared to what I had , but it works for now ...

P.S.
you get better , I don't want you worrying about these computers right now ,
just get better and we will fix this then , Thanks Bud !
and you just take it easy too ... you got it ?

 ok , good !

Another possibility is that they are overheating.  A lot of computers, especially laptops, will just shut off immediately if the internal temperature reaches a critical level.  This is to prevent hardware damage.  I had a laptop a couple of years ago that started doing that.  It would shut itself off within just a couple of minutes of turning it on.  I was afraid I was not going to be able to get my files before the thing completely died.  Once I figured out it was overheating, I pointed a cheap box fan at it and turned it on high.  Then it ran just fine for several hours while I copied all of my files to an external hard drive.  I think one of the internal fans stopped working, which caused the overheating.  It was a company laptop, so once I got my stuff off of there I turned it over to our IT guys and let them deal with it.

You checking you batt. levels. Maybe silly but before I'd buy a 4th one I'd try to charge for 12 hours or so. Whatever they used to have you charge prior to using one for the first time.

I think both of you are on to something
the Toshiba I think may be overheating like Coach said

on the Alien , when I press the battery checker it shoots all the
way across to the 5th light , it only has 5 ...

the repair guy told me on the phone to buy a new battery for it
that if the battery is bad it won't power up ...

battery is 200.00 bucks or close to it for what I have found .
the power supply on this thing is huge , twice the size of any other one I've seen
the power supply I bought was like 90 watt so maybe it wasn't big enough ?
