It is a measure of his success that few will even debate Nick Saban's selection recently by The Sporting News as the best college football coach in the country.

The gap between Saban and No. 2 Chris Peterson of Boise State -- a choice that could be debated -- is as wide as the Great Plains that separate Idaho from SEC country.

By the time he's done -- and there are no signs that he'll be slowing down anytime soon -- Saban should cement a place as one of the top coaches in college football history.

Curious then that more of his assistants haven't gone on to make names for themselves.

All great coaches in this sport eventually sprout a coaching tree. Saban himself learned much about his craft from New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, under whom he once worked in Cleveland.

But only two of Saban's assistants during his five years at Alabama have gone on to head coaching jobs. Jim McElwain took the Colorado State job this year, and Curt Cignetti went 7-3 in 2011 in his first season at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania. ...
