Title: What led Shaun Alexander to Alabama? Sixty degrees of separation
Post by: pmull on May 15, 2011, 12:43:09 PM
Shaun is one of my all time favorite Alabama players. After his junior year I thought he was gone to the NFL. He came back for his senior yar and led us to the SEC Championship. Shaun bypassing the NFL to come back was one of the most unselfish things I have ever seen.

He is being inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall Of Fame.

Former Tide Quarterback Jeff Rutledge will also be inducted. As a side note I played high school football and basebase against Jeff. We grew up playing little league sports together. He went to Banks and I went to rival Huffman. They killed us in football but we got them back in baseball.

By his senior season, he was a Heisman Trophy frontrunner. But that year almost never happened.

Alexander was projected to go in the first round of the NFL Draft as an underclassman, and the money was tempting.

"Chris Samuels and I came in together as part of a (signing) class of 14," Alexander said. "Chris said, 'I'm staying and I want us to come back together. If we leave and go pro, we'll make the money. But if we come back, our names will be linked to Alabama forever.' "

Passing up instant riches, the duo returned. But not without a little insurance that Alexander's mother purchased in case an injury wrecked his NFL dreams.

"I had every part of my body insured - my head, my neck, my back, you name it. We hedged our bets financially."
