TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Listen closely, and you'll hear the collective inhalation of the familiar smell of beefy nachos and chimalupas hovering around 15th Street.

The April 27 tornado that destroyed the homes and lives of so many Tuscaloosans and others throughout the state also claimed several of the city's favorite businesses, perhaps none more cherished than Taco Casa.

What about the cactus sign?

The Tuscaloosa News reported in July that some businesses on 15th Street, including Taco Casa's large cactus out front, did not meet city standards for signs, so changes had to be made. Before, they'd been grandfathered in, as they were built prior to those regulations being adopted.

To add a little more to the story here, the Taco Casa located on the corner of Skyland Blvd and McFarland Blvd was damaged by a tornado a week earlier than the April 27th one and has just recently reopened as well.

All of us Taco Casa lovers have been going through some hunger pains.

Glad to hear they were able to open again, but have never understood the love for that place.  It's like my Mom's attempt at Mexican food.

Amen, brother. I miss it greatly living down here in Mobile. Always make a stop when I am in Northport/Tuscaloosa.

As I recall they were cheap. I'd get about 5 of 'em and a Mt. Dew.

She's a good enough cook, but like most older Southern women, Mexican cuisine is not in her repertoire.

Bro. Ricky, whenever you get to T-town sometime, you HAVE to make Taco Casa a priority.
