John L. Smith will be the interim coach next year. This makes much more sense. If he does well they will keep him. Otherwise, they go after a big hire after next season.

Kind of a peculiar choice?  Sounds a lot like Petrino.  Didn't they learn anything?

Big splash with John Smith.  Other choices included John Doe.

They went after the unknown comic but they couldn't make the numbers work

The more I think about this Arkansas may have made a very good hire. John L. Smith was on Petrino's stall for several years. He left to take the HC position at Weber State after Arkansas played the Cotton Bowl game. He knows the Arkansas players and has HC experience at Louisville and Michigan State.

He signed a 10 month contract as interim Head Coach for $850,000. Other options would have been to hire an assistant already on the Arkansas staff but Petrino's top two assistants had left for HC jobs so no one on the staff had HC experience. Another option would have been to hire Gus Malzan or the UAB coach but you are stuck with them for several years.

This move allows Arkansas to bring in Smith who has HC experience and knows the team. He coaches a very talanted team with high expectations for one year. Meanwhile, the Arkansas AD is looking for a big time hire at the end of next season. Arkansas had no chance of hiring a big name coach this year. The AD is tring to salvage next season without locking into a long term contract so he can get who he wants long term at the end of next season.

Stupid decision by Arky! I can't believe they couldn't find a very good coach willing to take over a stocked, winning SEC program. This just kicks the decision down the road until November.

While I agree with PMull on the facts, it was really impolite of him to get all rational and logical up in the middle of our good time making fun of the Hogs. Tisk Tisk
