North Iowans salute a fallen hero

MASON CITY, Iowa --- A procession several miles long slowly wound its way to Rockford on Thursday, carrying home what one bystander called, "a real American hero."

The remains of Special Warfare Operator Petty Officer 1st Class Jon Tumilson, 35, of Rockford, who was killed Aug. 6 in Afghanistan, were flown to Mason City Thursday afternoon.

The white hearse carrying the Navy SEAL's remains was escorted by many law enforcement and fire department vehicles, as well as more than 500 motorcycle riders.

RIP Navy Seal.

I wonder who is seeing after "man's best friend" since his passing?

I wonder who is seeing after "man's best friend" since his passing?

Apparently some one who loves both of them and knows dogs.  Someone had to bring the dog to the funeral.  I suspect it is in the hands of a member or members of Jon's family.

On another note, Fox showed a clip of this funeral this morning.  The dog lay there the entire time and lead the procession out of the church.  This song was played at the funeral.  I know it well since it is one I love.  If you can watch the video this song and visualize the picture with the casket and the dog without tearing up,  you are stronger than I.  I sat at my computer and cried.

As for Hawkeye, the loyal Labrador will now be owned by Nichols, Tumilson’s friend.

The photo was snapped by Tumilson’s cousin, Lisa Pembleton, and posted on her Facebook page in memory of the San Diego resident.

Tumilson’s Labrador retriever, Hawkeye, was photographed lying by Tumilson’s casket in a heart-wrenching image taken at the funeral service in Tumilson’s hometown of Rockford, Iowa, earlier this week. Hawkeye walked up to the casket at the beginning of the service and then dropped down with a heaving sigh as about 1,500 mourners witnessed a dog accompanying his master until the end, reported CBS.
