Title: Tide/Oregon State BB Game This Week
Post by: Marshal Dillon on November 14, 2012, 11:32:19 AM
Oregon State was 20-15 last year, not world beaters, but not deadbeats, either. They play an up-tempo style of offense and averaged almost 78 points a game last year. This will be a good test of our test, especially our pressing D. I want to see Gueye and how he does in the middle, blocking shots, rebounding, & even scoring. I really hope we will see some outside shooting by us, especially Lacy. The game is on TV Thursday night.

The west coast teams do play a good brand of basketball, it will be a good test for Bama Thursday and Friday. If Bama can pull off two wins up there, what a great start it would be for the team.

This game is shaping up to be very interesting in several ways. How will Gueye & Engstrom do on the inside? Will Jacobs continue improving and prove to be a real force under the basket and improve his scoring? Will Releford, Lacy, & Randolph show us some outside shooting? How much will Pollard show us in his first real test? Can our D stop their outside shooting? I really want to see this game.

Is Jacobs & Relford hurt or did I miss something? Gueye and Pollard are starting, along with Lacy, Randolph, & Cooper.

Lacy has hit a 3 & a 2, while Cooper has 2. OSU has some shooters and a big guy in the middle. Time out, Oregon St. 10  Tide 7, plus we already have 3 team fouls. I still have not heard anything about Releford and Jacobs.

Tide has the ball after TO , and Releford, Jacobs, & Steele come into the game. 12-9 OSU.
OSU has 6 turnovers already, but we have 4 fouls, somewhat sloppy.

OSU big front court is killing us right now. Releford scored, then we get steal and fastbreak and Releford scores again and is fouled. 16-15 OSU with TO and Releford will then shoot his foul shot. I an not seeing much from our front court, so far. Gueye & Jacobs are quiet.

Tide is hustling, but OSU is playing solid BB. We are fouling TOO MUCH.  OSU 19  Tide 17.

Randolph hits a 3 and then Engstrom scores under the basket, after Lacy draws the D to himself. Tide 22 OSU 21. Timeout with 7:49 left in first half.

Tide gets 2 baskets from the inside by Engstrom an Pollard, then OSU gets an inside basket adn a FT for 3 points, but Releford scores 2 and hits a FT to complete the 3 point play. Tide 29  OSU 28. Releford drives and fakes out D and scores again, he has 10. Tide 31  OSU 28

OSU walks and ball goes to Bama. TV TO at 3:26 in half. Tide 31  OSU 30. We have had some success with the outside shot and I think that is keeping OSU honest on defense. This allows openings on the inside and for drives by Releford.

OSU has had 12 turnovers in the half and Tide bench has scored 19 points. Those turnovers are keeping us in the game. OSU 32  Tide 31. Pollard has 2 fouls. Tide has missed last 6 shots & not scored in last 4 minutes.

Lacey hits 2 FT's and has ball after rebound by Jacobs &  Releford drives to basket by 3 OSU players and scores. He looks a lot quicker than OSU. Releford has 12 points. Tide 35  OSU 32 at the half. Releford is eating these guys lunch with his drives to basket.

Tide had 22 points in the paint, 21 bench points, only 5 turnovers, and shot 14-30 in first half. Tide comes out hot to start 2nd half. Cooper & Lacey hit 3's & Cooper hits a 2. TO with Tide 43  OSU 34. OSU has committed 2 more turnovers, 14 for the game.

I think Releford prefers to play off the bench so he can watch the other team's D.

He definitely provides instant energy to the team. Probably why Grant has him come of the bench.

Tide is eating them up inside the paint. Pollard and Engstrom rebounding with Lacey & Releford scoring. Tide 59  OSU 49 with 7:55 left in game.

Tide has 13 2nd chance points, OSU 0. OSU hits 3 pointer, Tide 59  OSU 52. Their 1-3-1 zone is affecting us. Tide play is looking sloppy. OSU scores on bad pass and then fouled. Tide 59  OSU 54. Gueye back in game.

Releford steals ball and hits Lacey on alley oop for 2. Lacey has 20 points. Releford has 14 points and 5 assists.  Tide 61  OSU 56.

We've gone cold for now. 62-58 Tide. We are shooting too many 3's and missing. We get OSU turnover, they have 19 and Lacey comes back into game. We can not put the ball in the ocean right now. Looks painfully familiar.

Engstrom fouls out & OSU hits 2 FT's. 62-60 Tide.

Steele misses front end of 1 & 1 & OSU rebounds and we foul them shooting. OSU hits both FT's, game tied 62-62. Cooper hits big 3, we lead with 12 seconds and OSU calls time out before OSU player hits 3 pointer. Tide leads 65-62 with 5.2 seconds. OSU player runs into own player and loses ball out-of-bounds. OSU fouls Cooper. Cooper misses front end of 1 & 1. We are choking at the FT line. OSU rebounds and calls time out with 2.2 seconds. We just can not make it easy for ourselves. Tide wins on desperate shot by OSU 65-62.

CAG interview at the end of the game said it all (paraphrasing):  "This is a young team.  We're happy for the win.  We didn't play very well in the final minutes.  We were trying to protect the lead instead of increasing the lead.  We need to be more aggressive at the end and finish the game."

Isn't that the coach's job to have the team play more aggressive at the end?

True.  I guess he did say, "We."
