I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't read it myself.

Quote
The NFL employs 121 full-time referees, who reportedly make an average of $149,000 a year for their Sunday afternoon services. Most have other full-time jobs. The two main stumbling blocks in the labor dispute are retirement benefits and the NFL team owners' desire to impose new accountability standards on the referees.

On the retirement issue, refs currently have a guaranteed pension that the owners would like to convert to a market-vulnerable 401(k) plan. The owners are seeking new accountability by gaining the ability to pull poorly-performing refs and replace them from what would be a new pool of backup referees. Although this would expand the number of referee jobs, the officials are against it.

These replacement refs are a joke. Most have AFL (Arena), small college, Jr college or high school experience. We should have seen this coming.

As bad as the replacements are I can not side with the UNION refs. They are being paid pretty good but they do not want to be accountable for their mistakes. I'm OK with the 401K type retirement too. I bet the ref's don't contribute a nickle.

As long as I have college football I don't need the pro's anyway.

I would normally agree with this, but it seems that our recruiting success is somewhat tied to CNS's ability to put players in the league. If the league goes downhill due to these imcompetent refs, or if players get injured because the game is not being called accurately, this could hurt the college game in the long run. Just a thought...

While these strikes are a pain, they generally don't last long enough to do irreparable damage
I wouldn't be surprised if the thing isn't settled within two weeks.
