Title: Who will AJ McCarron throw to in 2012?
Post by: pmull on January 25, 2012, 02:42:57 PM
Quote
Kevin Norwood and Kenny Bell will both be juniors next season, and Norwood, in particular, made a strong case in the national championship game that he can be a go-to guy next season. He led the Crimson Tide with 78 receiving yards on four catches and made an acrobatic grab over LSU’s Tyrann Mathieu.

What Alabama was missing this past season was that big, physical receiver who could go over the middle and keep the chains moving on key third-down plays. Obviously, Julio Jones was that guy in the past, and he was also an explosive big-play threat.

It’s premature to think that anybody is ready to fill his shoes, but the wild card next season is Duron Carter. He wasn’t eligible to play this season and redshirted, but wowed more than once in practice with his ability to go get the football. The 6-4, 210-pound Carter figures to make an immediate impact next season as long as there are no more snags with his eligibility. This will undoubtedly be a big spring for him.

Two other guys poised to make big moves next season are DeAndrew White and Christion Jones, both of whom will be sophomores.

It's the TEs, not the WRs, that interest me for this offense.  Who will be next-year's Smelley?

Returning TE's are Michael Williams - SR, Brain Volger - SO and Harrison Jones - SO. We also have a good looking recruit named Kurt Freitag from Buford, GA committed. One of them has to step up and be the receiver Brad Smelly and Colin Peek was. A good TE puts a lot of pressure on the linebackers. It's actually more of an 'H' back position than a blocking TE.

Tightend. I think his name is Underwood. He played all year. I don't think he graduated.

I think Williams will be the main TE. He has size at 6'5" & 265 and has good hands. I like him. Plus, Norwood made a statement in a big time game, so he will be a significant contributor. He showed incredible hands.

Underwood was a senior.

Agreed.  AJ will have plenty of options with Norwood, Williams, Bell, White, possibly Carter, etc.  If anything, he should have more options next year than he had this year.  Hanks and Maze will be missed, but the younger guys are taller and are more prototypical receivers, and AJ showed the ability in the NCG to get them the ball over the heads of shorter defenders.

DW saw playing time early and caught a few balls.  Seems to be a speed guy.  Needs to get in the weight room.

Williams was the main tight end this year. Smelly played more of an 'H' back than a blocking TE. Williams and Smelly were in the game together most of the time. Williams does not have the hands or speed of Smelly.

Yeah, agreed.  That's why I asked, 'Who will be the Smelley'?

I wonder what kind of hands JF has.  He is big enough to move to the H-back position.

You know, if taken out of context, this would be pretty funny:
" 'Who will be the Smelley'? "

Harrison Jones (Barrett younger brother) was listed is listed on the TideSports depth chart as Smelly's back-up. He will be a RS freshman next year. Looking over the roster I came accross a name I have not heard, Malcolm Faiane from Picayune, MS. He redshirted this year but his bio looks good. It says he can play either TE position. He was the #4 TE going out of HS. I know we have a TE commitiment this year too.

The bio link for Malcolm Faciane is below:

I think AJ will have his choice because we have a lot of guys who will step forward to be blocking and catching tight ends. Williams will do the job in my opinion. Mostly behind him in my thought is Jones, who has a redshirt year to figure out the scheme but we now have a new OC so he may have to learn changes coming in the plays. RTR!
