I remember that so well. I had just lost my grandfather a few weeks before and was already really down when I heard the news on DT. We was one of my favorite players as a youngsters, and still holds a special pacle in my heart as one of my favorite Tide players of all time.

What makes these tragic deaths even more disheartening is that prior to their death, these athletes were strong, vibrant, and seemed to be able to live forever.

My life as a teenager (14) was put (at least temporarily) on hold in 1970.

Derrick Thomas, Pat Trammel, the list goes on until you reach a big oak tree in Heaven where they sit in the shade with Coach Bryant, discussing the Tide being #1 over OU  and how the heat will affect 2-a-days next month.

WV, did you watch the movie "We are Marshall"? I thought it was well done even though it was gut wrenching. You said your life was on hold, did you know someone involved in that crash?

I thought the movie was low budget, but told the story fairly well. You have to remember this was before the 24 hour a day news channels. Here in WV it was the talk for months and still comes up in conversation along with a host of other tragedies  No personal ties, other than the woman later becoming a cheerleader at Marshall (she was only 5 at the time).

Coal mine explosions, bridge callapsing, union wars, flooding (see Buffalo Creek), and the Marshal plane crash. For a small state with a small population, we have had our share of grief.  But no tragedy as great as will be the affects of Obamacare on an elderly (per capita) population or the systematic intentional bankrupting of the coal industry by BHO.

We Are Marshall was one of the most gut wrenching NON Chick movie, that I've ever seen.  Heck, I can get a headache right now thinking about how much I cried when I saw that movie.  I cannot imagine how they coped with that tragedy.
