The gloves, brothers and sisters, have come off. The NCAA is beefing up the enforcement staff and, after getting beat up for a couple of years, those enforcement people are going to quit playing defense and go on offense.

The NCAA got embarrassed by the Southern California case because the violations were so blatant.

They got hammered for their ruling in the Cam Newton case but basically had no choice because of a loophole in the rules. That loophole will be closed but, despite the lack of evidence, there will always be those who are convinced Auburn got away with something.

OSU has ceded the Sugar Bowl win aided by Dan Herron, one of five Buckeyes suspended before the game but allowed to play.

The NCAA made the colossally bad decision to allow Ohio State's "Tat Five" to play in the Sugar Bowl. Ohio State has now vacated the win and the coach of the team has been shoved out the door. History will record that this decision was the true tipping point, when everything changed.

pmull, the link doesn't go there. It's the CBS sports web site and nothing about the article there that I can see.

1. If the NCAA says you have a problem, you have a problem. Immediately declare the athlete in question ineligible and hire the best lawyers who have experience with NCAA compliance cases. Give that person absolute authority to find out what happened. When it comes to NCAA compliance cases, you are guilty until proven innocent. Sorry. That's the rule.

I fully expected this. The NCAA tried playing nice with Ohio State, USC, & Auburn and got HUGELY embarassed and criticized. Now, they will slowly torture then kill the next program that is in the crosshairs. Right now, that's Ohio St. and Oregon. Auburn could be in the mix, but we don't know what's out there that the NCAA might have or could have in the near future. They have to bury Ohio State in order to get their credibility back, so they are dead man walking.

Well color me skeptical.  We have one writer --ONE! -- saying NCAA has got new toughness.  I'll believe that when I see NCAA uncover some facts that haven't already come to light.  tOSU case was handed to them.  NCAA didn't uncover it.  So the skillful cheaters out there (and we know who one of them is) will simply say "gotta' be more careful."

Strongly disagree. They were supposdly close to USC & the Pac Ten & the Big Ten. Well, USC got knocked on its butt and they are about to bury Ohio State. Next, they will be going after Oregon.

I am at a Division II school, and from what I have heard from those faculty on the Athletic Committee, is that yes, the NCAA is finally serious. Now all this is second hand so take it with a grain of salt. I thought of serving on committee but they are expected to attend all home games, and I will be danged if I miss a Bama game for a Division II game.

Several years ago I was asked to served on an athletic committee at an SEC school Wink ).  I enjoyed the information about compliance issues and hearing "inside info" about the players, got free tickets to attend events, heard much about the NCAA investigations, ate a lot of free lunches, met all of the coaches regularly, and had fun, but soon found the committee had little power to accomplish any change in the programs.  The coaches handle the fun stuff themselves, and the lawyers handle the problems.  Division II must be similar.
