I see some major sanctions coming down on UNC. Look for a loss of 30 scholarships, no bowl games, games forfeited, and so on. This will be interesting.

Meanwhile, in Chapel Hill, N.C., the entire university is complicit in a systemic charade of bogus, no-show classes for athletes; a scheme that—you’re gonna love this part—the NCAA missed while investigating North Carolina over the past two years.

Quote
Think about that: the athletic department and a department of academics conspiring to keep students eligible so they can play games. This isn’t high school, everyone. This is one of the most respected academic institutions in the world cheating to keep athletes eligible.

Agreed. This is about academic fraud, the heart of what the NCAA is about. I can't wait to see how the NCAA deals with this one. And what about the basketball program?

I'm not certain but I believe that losing your academic accreditation takes all your teams of the field.

That's a minor concern. If you lose accreditation, the college degree is worthless for all students.

LOL!! Remember the Tennessee player who failed "walking" as part of his courses?

How did the NCAA investigators miss this during the 2 year investigation.  I am starting to understand how the roller barn gets away with it now.

I think the basketball team can't be touched. Too much blue blood for the NCAA.

This is a major embarrassment for UNC folks who are not cheating on academics.  I am heavily invested in the school, so this is a pain for me too.

Here's what's going on.  The NCAA can only punish if athletes are given preferential treatment.  Some of these classes had athletes and other students enrolled.  If all were treated similarly (grades without much work), then it's a university issue; wrong as far as the school is concerned, but not an NCAA violation.  That's why the NCAA "missed" some of this the first time around.  At least that's the simple version.

UNC is MEGA-pissed about this mess.  They will solve it.  Meanwhile, the NCAA has gotten involved again too.  The school will punish all involved, and it appears the NCAA will punish the school again.  Alumni and students welcome the cleanup.  Meanwhile it will be painful, and may include the basketball program too!

I hope for the best for UNC and the great folks there
in all my travels in this great country we live in ... I have to say,
the time I've spent with the folks there I found them to
be some of the best , anywhere ... bar none ...

Same here. It's been quite some time since I've been there (my cousin played football there from 1972-1976), but I remember it as a beautiful campus with great people. I hope they get it all turned around.

Chec - Even if the NCAA is assuaged by the fact that non-athletes took the bogus courses, the acedemic accreditation agency won't be. In the end I doubt that their agency (SACS?) will revoke their accreditation, crippling such an outstanding school, but they will prolly put a shot across the bow that will get everyone's attention.
