Title: Basketball News
Post by: pmull on May 21, 2017, 09:32:19 AM
I have not seen any of the news below discussed:

Yasir Rosemond hired as assistant coach. Hired away from Georgia he is known as a very good recruiter. He was at Oregon prior to UGA. Looks like a solid hire.

Quote
"I am thrilled to have Yasir join our basketball staff as assistant coach," Johnson said. "When paired alongside John Pelphrey, our associate head coach, and Antoine Pettway, who we feel is a rising star and has been elevated to the No. 2 position on our staff, we feel we have a dynamic trio in terms of recruiting. We understand that while each of us could take a lead with any recruit, it is a collaborative effort amongst the four of us. One of our goals in terms of recruiting is to continue to strengthen our position in the southern part of the country while also finding ways to open doors internationally. Yasir has some great ideas on how to help us accomplish those goals.

"Yasir has been a part of some very good staffs during his coaching career. He is very familiar with the SEC and has had great relationships with the players, coaches and support staffs. With the momentum surrounding the Alabama men's basketball program and the tremendous support we receive from our athletics department and our donors, we feel that Yasir is going to be well-positioned to be very successful."

Tevin Mack commits to Bama. A 6-7 220 small forward was the #58 player coming out of high school. He signed with Texas over Alabama. He averaged 14.8 points/game in 15 games last year before being dismissed from the team. He scored 11 points in Texas win over us last year. He will sit out next year and have two years remaining. This is a nice pick-up.

Quote
Mack scored 14.8 points per game in 15 games with the Longhorns as a sophomore. That led the team. He shot 45 percent from the floor, 39.1 percent from 3-point range. Mack was just a 58.8 percent free throw shooter and averaged 4.8 rebounds.

Mack scored 11 points in 37 minutes in Texas' 77-68 win over Alabama last season.

Braxton Key expected to return to Alabama. Key was not invited to the NBA combine. He did try out for a few teams. It is being reported the teams he tried out with recommended he return to school for at least another year and work on his game. Reports state that it was always the NBA or return to Bama. Nothing official yet but expect Key to return.

Collin Sexton continues to impress during the off season. Good article about him winning MVP at a another All-American game in Long Beach, CA.

Quote
Collin Sexton wants to make sure Alabama basketball fans know they are getting much more than just a scorer and he used Saturday’s Ballislife All-American Game at Long Beach City College to showcase every aspect of his game.

A scorer, yes, very much so, but Sexton is so much more.

He’s can play both on and off the ball with his ability to combine willingness to find teammates, but also score from all three when he feels his side needs a boost.

But Sexton thrives amid a sea of confidence, intensity and showmanship that made for a perfect wave of All-American style basketball, finishing with 27 points while earning MVP honors as he helped lead Team Elite to a 153-134 victory against Team Future.

“I’m bringing my intensity and my drive to shock a whole lot of people,” Sexton said. “I feel like everybody thinks Alabama is just a football school, but we’re going to change that around.”

Good stuff, pmull. I had heard about getting the coach from Georgia, but this is the first I've heard about Mack. He is indeed, a good pickup from a numbers standpoint. Makes me wonder, though, why he was dismissed from Texas' team.

I figured Key would be returning and that's good news. This will be the year everybody has been talking about, year 3. Let's hope the team meets expectations.

I'm assuming it is drug or some kind of acting out behavior got him dismissed. I hope it was not bad behavior towards a female.

He was suspended multiple times before his dismissal.
Sounds like a fine example of "college gentleman".

One place I read said he had an "attitude" problem.

Well he won't be such a great pickup if CAJ can't get his attitude right. Wait and see on this one. RTR!

CAJ was pretty excited on Twitter when Mack committed. I have to believe Coach wouldn't bring him in if he had concerns about his character, or at least his ability to mature and contribute. Mack will have to sit out 2017-18. He'll have a year to prove he can follow the rules and be a team player. If it works out, Bama is going to be a tough team to beat by 2018-19.

^^This^^

CAJ recruited him out of high school. We almost got him but he signed with VCU. Once Smart resigned to go to Texas VCU let him out of his commitment and he followed Smart to Texas. CAJ knows him pretty well. I am sure he is aware of the issues he had at Texas and does not think it will be a problem going forward.

One thing that bothers me is he stated he wanted to be closer to home because he was homesick. Sounds good, except he is from South Carolina, not Alabama. At least he can watch the SEC Network and not the Longhorn Network. I'm sure Coach Johnson had a talk with Coach Smart at Texas and a long talk with Mack. Right now, I'm excited about the addition. He still has to sit out a year, doesn't he or did I miss something?

It is my understanding that any recruit like this has to sit out one year. RTR!

With all of the talk of late being about Key, I haven't heard or read anything about the transfer we got last year from Ohio State, Daniel Giddens and how much he can add to the team this year. He had to sit out last year but has practiced with the team and should know the system pretty much. He sure has the size and looks to be a good player but that is purely speculation. In reading his Bio, I thought he had some decent but not great numbers that he brought with him but he was a youngster then and has been at Bama for a year now. It would be nice to have him burst out and become the big man that we all have been waiting on for quite a while now, we sure need one.

I'd forgotten about him. He and Donta Hall could be a strong duo if Hall continues to develop and Giddens lives up to his high school hype. Next season's team should be Sweet 16 caliber, at least.

Key is officially back as of yesterday. He withdrew from the NBA Draft as expected.

Giddens is expected to share time at the post with Hall. This gives us two big men that are interchangeable. We also have two freshmen in Reese and Smith to go along with Key and Norris at forwards. We will be big again this year. We should have a height and rebounding advantage over every team in the league except UK

Our team will be very deep next year. Expected starting guards are Sexton and Ingram. Petty, Davis and JR off the bench.

Buckle Up!
