OK Coach, I have a question. Others are welcome to chime in as well. It seems to me that the proliferation of 7 on 7 is ruining important parts of football. There is no premium on blocking and tackling.  How can OL develop if all you do is pass protect. Defense has become less important because the goal is just to keep scoring.

I bring this up because my son's middle school team plays this way. Granted I love old man football, but my son is a lineman and they spend such little time on run blocking . Every move is backwards to pass protect.  They never run the ball. They screen and drift out. All schools have gone to this.

The Big 12 started it and if I were a lineman with a future, why play there. I look at Texas and I wonder what happened. They can't block. It is a fundamental that is being thrown away. Someone please help me make sense of this. Every game I shoot on Friday night s like this. Games last forever and teams win 38-35. Help.

It goes in cycles.  I agree there is a big emphasis on throwing the ball.  I think if you look at the most successful teams they are more balanced.  They still run the ball, but they may not have many running plays.  I think many also feel run blocking is harder than run blocking.

Very true. I just spent the evening with some of my son's middle school team and they wanted to watch Baylor and Oregon. Listening to them it is all like a video game. My son has gone to a couple of football camps and they did teach technique, but he seldom gets to use it. We put cones I out in the back yard so he can practice. He likes football because he gets to hit and tackle.

All high school teams in Alabama run some version of a spread offense now. The QB is never under center, always in shotgun. They throw it a lot but good teams always have a strong running back. In the spread a quick swing pass to the RB is today's toss sweep. Good teams play physical defense and stop the run.

Even in spread football it comes down to who can run the ball, stop the run, turnovers and kicking game. Some things never change.

I officiated a game Friday night where both teams actually ran a version of the wing T, running misdirection and the old buck sweep. Loved it.
