Legendary University of North Carolina head basketball coach Dean Smith -- a man who left his mark on young men both on and off the court -- died Saturday evening at the age of 83, according to the University of North Carolina's official athletics website.

He had battled dementia for years, and according to a family statement provided to UNC, he "passed away peacefully" in his Chapel Hill home with his wife and five children by his side.

Prayers are going out to the family in JESUS name. Losing a loved one ain't easy but he was a man of moral standards. He will live on in the BB life forever as Coach Rupp. God Bless. RTR!

I always admired Dean Smith. I had no idea he was suffering from dementia. Prayers to the family.

Unfortunately, already hearing rumors about the NC football scandal being linked to his bb programs.  Didn't take long!   Banging your head against the wall.

I too have always held Coach Smith in high regard. But, that said, this scandal appears to have been long-running, and you don't gear something like that up to support a middling football program in a middling football league. I hated to learn about what Coach Paterno did (or failed to do), and I desperately hope that Coach Smith is vindicated. But the program at UNC did what they did, and it's on them that the question is there to be asked, not on us.
