Diagnosed with what was described as a treatable form of lung cancer shortly after his firing Nov. 9, the reports since have indicated former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno had been making progress in his battle against the disease.

Sadly, reports coming out of State College Saturday paint a different and decidedly grim picture of the 85-year-old’s health.

BlueWhiteIllustrated, the Rivals.com website dedicated to cover Penn State sports, reports that Paterno is in bad shape and extended family has been called to State College due to his declining health.  OnwardState.com tweeted earlier in the evening Paterno was taken off a respirator this morning.

As soon as he was fired I thought to myself this will be just like what happened with Coach Bryant. When football is your life..........

That would be just the height of irony if JoePa goes here pretty soon. I hate that he would leave this earth this way, but unfortunately much of it was of his own doing. Prayers for him and his family.  Pray

God Bless Joe and his family. I am probably one of the few here who believe he was treated like crap by a school that owes their entire sports program to him. Everyone is quick to judge him.  When he gets to heaven, I hope he and Bear have some good visiting!
Prayers for the entire Paterno family.

I hate that his life took such a bad turn right at the end.  Hope his wife and kids get to the point where they only remember the good years.

@terrie...I think taking down the state was definitely a bit much.

He did kind of go out like the Bear...just a few months after he is not coaching he passes away.  That says a lot about their devotion to coaching.

I honestly think this is what motivated both him and Bowden to keep going so long.  They were probably concerned that they wouldn't last long after they retired.

I agree about JP.  I think Bowden was shooting for the record, and he will keep busy on the golf course for a few more years.
