Tight end Brad Smelley took a direct snap from the center right through the middle of the line for the conversion. Tide coach Nick Saban said Smelley actually missed a wide hole on the outside that would have made the conversion less controversial.

Penn State coach Joe Paterno said he felt the spot on the ball was questionable, but with all three timeouts gone on the opening drive, the Lions had no option but to accept the call.

I don't care if Brad Smelley was ruled down short of the first down marker. Penn State may have kicked a field goal, but would not have scored a touchdown. It took them two years - two football games - 7 quarters and 14 minutes to score their first TD.
