Title: Coach Avery Johnson & Finebaum Interview
Post by: Marshal Dillon on March 13, 2019, 07:13:03 PM
He was interviewed by Finebaum today. Read article and tell us what you think.

Quote
Johnson said it’s a “strong statement” to claim his Alabama program is not headed in the right direction in Year 4. He said this isn’t Year 8 or 9 and they’re still fighting for an NCAA tournament spot in Nashville.

Quote
Finebaum again pressed Johnson on his commitment to the Alabama program.

“If you ever wonder about it, just stop by my office at 5 in the morning,” Johnson said beginning to laugh, “or 10:00 at night and watch me throughout the games when I’m up on the sidelines coaching. Or if you’ve ever had an opportunity to see me in practice, it looks like a guy that’s fully committed.”

CAJ has a hard job. He has to improve this coming year because they are his recruits. We shall see, but he better turn that bench around and put the right 5 out there to play no matter their year in school. RTR!

He desperately needs to land Trevon Watford, but he's trending away from Alabama.  Some of the Birmingham radio guys say that he'd be more inclined to come to Alabama if Avery was no longer the coach.

Don't worry, I'll be posting a Fire Avery Johnson thread, soon.

That's what AD Greg Byrne is paid $980,000 a year, to find good coaches.

There’s no way to know how a guy is going to do until he gets here and does the job. Anthony Grant was supposed to be a home run hire. He was one of the most promising young head coaches in the country when he came here. He didn’t produce a winner. Avery Johnson was a home run hire - an NBA legend who took the Mavericks to the finals. He hasn’t produced a winner (yet).

If we fire Johnson and move on, who knows what the next coach will do. We’ve been stuck in mediocrity since the program peaked under Gottfried in 2002-04. 15 years under Gottfried, Grant, and Johnson of being on the bubble every year - never terrible, never very good.

You forgot the lost 6 years under David Hobbs. If you don't demand excellence you get average. By the way, Avery Johnson is NOT an NBA legend.
