Mark Barron has spent one season as the new guy in the University of Alabama secondary and another as the old guy. Entering the 2011 season, the Crimson Tide's third-year starting safety no longer qualifies for either.
Next to Barron at safety, Robert Lester led the Southeastern Conference in interceptions last season (eight) in his first year as a starter. On the corners, Dre Kirkpatrick and Dee Milliner now have a year of starting experience as well. Add to that Dequan Menzie, whose role as the nickel back last year was essentially a starting position, and the Alabama secondary figures to be one of the league's best this season.
"Mark in his own way is one of the better leaders that we have on the team, and certainly the leader of that group (secondary). He has gotten more assertive as he has gotten older and mature," said UA coach Nick Saban.
