"Sure. Dont'a Hightower. He's the guy," Smart said. "Mark (Barron is) a little like that, but Dont'a is a little more vocal than Mark. I certainly think Dont'a has the capability to do that, to be that leader. He wanted to do that last year. He just really never could get around to doing it."
One factor that is certain to make Hightower's leadership role come more easily is the experience he'll be surrounded by at his position.
To one side, Hightower will likely be flanked by senior Courtney Upshaw and, depending on the situation, weakside linebackers C.J. Mosley and Nico Johnson. All have at least a year of game experience. To the other side - at least when UA is in its regular defense - Hightower could be looking at senior Jerrell Harris, who has limited experience but carries the maturity of a fourth-year player.
