Title: Was that a "Fake Punt" by Florida?
Post by: crimson13 on December 04, 2016, 08:39:22 AM
Florida's "Fake Punt".  Gary kept insisting that this was a called fake punt.  It looked like a the snap was high and wide right, and the punter didn't handle it.  Also, why would Coach Mac be so upset if they called the play?

I will be reviewing the play again later today to see if I missed something.

RTR!!!

I thought the same thing; bad snap and punter who decided to make a play.
Haven't reviewed it yet either.

I actually thought it was a called play they had worked on and Coach Mc knew they had it right in practice and just blew it all to pieces in the game but I could be wrong as usual. RTR!

That is what it looked like to me. There was a couple of plays the announcers offered up their guesstimates of what happened that I did not agree with ???

All these scenarios fit the available data. I guess we can be sure they didn't plan for it to turn out like it did.

If it was a fake, the snap would have been to the up man, who tried to catch it but it went over his head.  So maybe it was a planned fake but the snapper hiked the ball too high?  They wouldn't have run a fake with a snap to the punter.

From watching live, my take was that it was a bad snap high and to the right.  The punter had to step to the side to field it.  This cost him some time.  Bama had guys coming around that side unblocked, so he probably did not have time to get a punt off.  Normally the defenders would not have time to get there but because the punter had to move to his right and take time to field the punt it likely would have been blocked if he had tried to punt.  The bad snap carried him right into the path of the unblocked defenders.

It was supposed to be a snap to the up-back and looked to be running the counter back to the left.

I think it was a very bad snap and not a fake punt.

I saw this play live and in a game replay.  Whatever was planned, I thought the punter seemed surprised that the snap came to him.  His footwork fielding the ball didn't look like he was prepared to kick.

Here is why I am sure it was a fake.  1.  The left up-back takes off on the snap.  How many times have you seen an up-back take off on the snap instead of staying back and protecting the punter.  2.  The up-back that was supposed to get the ball is seen explaining, on TV, to the coach that the snap was high.  3.  There were not many OL blocking to release to go down to cover the punt.

I agree.  I went back and watched the play several times and the line and the backs are definitely blocking for a run off left tackle.  It probably would have gained the 2 yds. needed if the ball had not gone through his hands.  They were lucky the punter was able to catch the deflection or it would have gone into the end zone.  We got 0 points from this FL mistake.

When Florida called time out, I said "fake punt". The Bama fans around me agreed. So, there you have it. It was a fake punt.  8)
