I mean the guy represented himself at sentencing and said nothing in his defense, nothing period. Not to mention what a heinous crime it was in the first place. Believe it or not, military officers are loathe to really hammer defendants in a trial. I served in the Army for 7 years and saw this a couple of times (not for murder). A soldier was just found guilty of 16 murders in Afghanistan and he got life. Death or life in prison with no chance of parole. Easy choice if you ask me although it is rare in the military. Unfortunately he will remain on death row for years while he appeals. Appeals will go on for who knows how long.
